Thank you very much! it was so good that it could almost be canon. I really appreciate that, because I've never written anything AU before and I was worried I might be a total spaz at it. I'm glad to get thanks for the depressingness as well, even if I feel like now I owe you some rainbows and lollipops :)
This was so heartbreaking. You had me crying in the last chapter-thinking Sam was dying and Dean would be all alone(the way it was written, Sam wanting to go outside-it just made me cry), and then all of a sudden Bobby shows up and I knew Sam wouldn't die, but it was a shock-I had to take a break from reading. Then I read this chapter and it's even worse than I thought

I also have to say one more thing. I thought about it and I think it was the scene with Castiel that really made me start to suspect (before my suspicions were destroyed even though I was right). In the scene Castiel completely ignores Dean, and Dean doesn't say anything. Then it turned out 'Dean' had made the angel-repulsion seal, so I figured that's why he wasn't talking. But he silently slipped the bloody knife into Sam's hand before the banishing. I found that strange...That's where my 'Dean is dead/not there' suspicion arose

Thank you so so much for taking the time to comment about this! I'm so happy to hear about all the things you noticed. The many clues throughout the story were definitely deliberate, particularly the scene with Castiel. That scene, and the phone calls with Bobby, were a tricky balancing act to give hints without giving it all away. I'm also delighted to hear you believed Sam was dying in the fifth chapter- I really wanted to make that seem real, and very sad, to keep people even more off balance for the big reveal at the end.
As for if/how Dean got Sam out of Hell and the reality of the shadow creatures… The goal was to leave the true extent and severity of Sam's delusions up for speculation so I'm wonderfully glad to hear you speculating about it.
Thanks again for the awesome review! I'm so glad you picked up on the clues. :)
This was a lovely, and heartbreaking story. These boys, they can never be happy when they are apart but the world just keeps trying to take them from each other.
