My mysterious disappearance is attributable to a time-consuming job; but at least I'm making (a little) money and I'm feeling miserably sane and happy right now. Since everyone who reads your life journal knows you have monetary problems and some other people who don't read it know also, why don't you just tell people "I'm sorry, but I'm having a rough financial year; my presents won't be as elaborate/expensinve as they should be." Anyone who really cares about you would rather see you stable than going into debt to please them. You need to get your prioritize straight, and expensive presents for people just seems like it could be viewed as an overcompensation for the fact that you don't have may things as together as you'd like.
