One of the things that one learns about on the PADI Open Water Course is nitrogen loading. There are various charts that one needs to learn to use in order to ascertain how long one can remain at certain depths before being required to return to the surface. This is to avoid the bends. I misread:

It completely changed my perception of the holiday

Here here. Although I think our guide did begin to suspect you weren't Bedouin when you began to use your pipe to point things out. The clincher was when you stated that you probably wouldn't trust the locals with rifles. If you can cast your mind back, this was during the pipe pointing speculation that a file of riflemen from the indian sub continent and a few dozen indigenous people to carry the camp would make you feel right at home.
