Creating Memories

Earlier today, I saw a piece on Yahoo about a family who, for 20 years, would go on camping adventures across the country. The attitude of the person sharing the piece and the attitude in the front page blurb was that this is the only way to take a family vacation ( Read more... )

I have to agree. Places we have gone with our son when he was young may have created a special memory for me or his father but son's recollection can be something entirely different. Most of our favorite memories are of little things. Having those terrible cinnamon rolls for Christmas morning that always seem to be burned or eating pizza the first night in a move to a new house. Playing card games during a blizzard, son helping me unload groceries so he can see what "treats" I bought for him that week. You know, the important stuff!

I remember you writing about this before. I didn't get quite the same sense as you did from the family themselves, but I think Yahoo did them a great disservice by making the title and lead-in sound like that was the way of taking a vacation. I think the mother was encouraging people to take vacations, but that in itself is limiting.

To my experience, whenever one tries to "create memories", memories are created, but not the ones that you would like. I've always remember the build up or aftermath of the hyped memory events more.
