I posted in WC also, but here is a list so far of very nice hotels. The Argent look very nice. The Sir Francis Drake and Mark Hopkins are both historic hotels.
Hey P - Looked at those hotels and you have some FABU suggesstions. J is really stuck on the Intercontinental because of the restaurant I guess and the location but it is so hard to say when you haven't been to the area. Do you know anyone who has stayed there? I am reading the reviews on tripadvisor now about your suggesstions, I will let you know what I find, the Prescott has some really neat packages for the summer! I just read that the Argent got some poor reviews for being more run down, sheesh! Hard decisions! How you feeling?
So funny, but I was just watching a Tivo'd show of Great Hotels on the Travel Channel and it was about the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins. It looks wonderful. The suite they showed had this glassed-in terrace. The hotel is very elegant looking. Also, I almost forgot about "The Top of The Mark" lounge. I have been wanting to go. Here's the scoop on it. http://www.san-francisco.intercontinental.com/sfoha/dining_01.html I think this hotel would be great for you guys. It is in a good location. You can walk and cab all over.
Freckles5 directed me over here. I live in San Francisco and she mentioned you were looking for hotel accommodations. I think the Four Seasons sounds like the perfect choice based on what you want. It's in a great location, totally beautiful and romantic, and has great city views. Plus, the experience of staying at a Four Seasons is like none other. The impeccable service will blow your mind!
Hi there! I'm a friend of Freckles, here with some SF advice. (I lived there for five years.) The Mark Hopkins sounds like a great choice for what you want. It's up the hill from Union Square, which is a GOOD THING because the area right around Union Square is a bit downtrodden, IMO. Another one to check out would be the Fairmont -- sooooooo gorgeous, and also on Nob Hill.
My advice is to see Union Square and the Wharf, but don't spend all your time there. The real beauty and fun of San Francisco is in the neighborhoods -- the Marina, Cow Hollow, Pacific Heights, Noe Valley, Haight-Ashbury, etc. Also, you should definitely take the ferry to Sausalito one day -- it's so cute!
you know me...any opportunity to talk about my hometown...:) i'm there!
some hotels have already been listed but i wanted to mention one that hasn't. the weston st. francis....right in union square. john and i stay there all the time when we're in SF. actually we'll be there for a week in july, too, and will be staying there again. don't forget, the westin has the 'heavenly bed'...their signature cozy, comfy bed that we absolutely LOVE while we're on vacation.
i have lots of other recs but you can let me know if you need them...looks like you may have quite a bit of info coming from other posters.
