Lock screen customization is one of the new 3.10 features. I agree, this pink "volcano" does not really fit with the default background color. Since it's new and has been asked by many. Now, we feel the need to customize this feature.. Hey, isn't that smart? We are all going to see how to do it. You've already promoted this feature :)

Ok, it goes against the GNOME way... but I like thinking about forcing people to ask question in order to understand how their system work.

Under the Fedora Project, we can also probably define a Fedora default one, as we do with the wallpaper. It's probably on the Design team hand.

Well as Bastien already pointed out in the post above yours, the premise for this post was wrong. Any photo in your ~/Pictures directory will show up in the Pictures tab, so there is no 'hardcoding'. And beyond that adding something to the panel for selection a new image is planned and also in GNOME 3.10.1 you can drag and drop an image onto the control panel.

The premise wasn't wrong, the way I solved it may not have been the ideal mechanism, but how was I to know that ~/Pictures was a magical place? :)
