I think that is the cat's way of asking you to pet him. Joe's dog often will often pay me gently with her paw when she is looking for attention.
My landlord has a cat though and he is wicked passive aggressive about it. He'll rub up against table legs while glaring at me until I get the hint and go pick him up.
I am sure he is asking me to pet him. Seems more like "I want to be petted, but I am not selfish... look I'll pet you too." He does try to get attention by rubbing legs. Not nearly as much as he did when he first got here.
Our cat is basically a teenage boy. He is an indoor/outdoor cat, so when the weather is nice, he drops in only at mealtimes. So he'll come inside, after ignoring us for ever, and will just give us dirty looks while he pets himself by rubbing up against table legs, like we are such horrible people that we have been ignoring him and he has needs.
Maggie mostly does it when I am petting her and stop for some reason. Like she's asleep or it's my turn to play Super Mario. And she will very gently pick up her paw and tap me on the hand or knee to remind me that she is still there. She is definitely selfish.
I wish I wanted a cat. I like them, but not enough to own one.
I never wanted a cat. First one was a stray that decided it lived at our house. Kept sneaking in the door when it was opened and ran under the rocking chair. We finally said "OK, you can live here but don't expect normal house-cat treatment." This one needed a home after grandma died and we had just lost our pet.
Aww Spotty Cakes is a big old softy. I think I love you a little more knowing you took in a homeless cat (now that granny died) I adore cats as I don't have to pay attention to them unless I go and seek them out. Plus they are soft . And no sound in the world beats a good deep purring. (I gotta go see my cat now and pester her while she is sleeping. She's smaller than me so she can't get away... Muuuwahhhahaha)
