The setup: I guy I know through the civic club's 13 year old daughter was kayaking in Trinidad (where her mom is from) and got run over by a 28' speedboat. After 6 or 7 operation and a very expensive air ambulance home, they amputated her arm. Yes, there has been just as much damaging inaction in god's name, as there has been damaging action. It just doesn't get as much press.

The supernatural fiction does seem to serve two purposes: that there is an omnipotent agent behind everything allows one to be intellectually lazy, and that he can be entreated to do acts of kindness allows one to be lazy in many other respects.

The cosmic sky-daddy allows believers to remain children.

I can sort of see value in taking a few minutes to focus hope for something. It does draw attention to it, and it may linger in the mind for a while, providing some reflection. So there might be a little something useful in prayer-like ritual.

Obviously the flipside is the regular tendency to then DO nothing about it, being satisfied that, well, I prayed, work is done. And once jeebus is involved (or given credit!) it's a lost cause anyhow.
