Chanyeol is surprised when he finds Luhan at his door. It’s not that the Chinese man isn’t a close friend, it’s just that it’s unusual for Chanyeol to receive a visit from said man. Also, last time he had seen Luhan, the other man had gotten on his nerves, but maybe Chanyeol deserved it being yelled at for being a whiny flower.
“Hey, Chanyeol,” Luhan seeing Chanyeol, smile plastered on his delicate lips.
“Um,” Chanyeol is still confused, “Hi, Luhan.” He replies and awkwardly rubs his nape.
The silence stays a bit more, neither of them saying something to break it, they just look everywhere but at each other. It’s mid November so the wind outside has become freezing, the air flowing into Chanyeol’s apartment.
Chanyeol sighs and decides to say something, “Do you want to come in?” to which Luhan only replies with a nod and a smile.
Once they are both in and Luhan has left his layers of jackets and scarves at the locket next to the entrance door, they sit on the sofas, opposite to each other. They still try to avoid each other by doing whatever they can. Fumbling with finger and fabric, humming songs, looking at the walls, anything. It’s awkward, but Chanyeol had expected it.
Luhan coughs and when Chanyeol looks at him, they finally look at each other. “I came here to apologize.”
His words are soft, Chanyeol notices. He is being honest. Chanyeol lets that little bit of information sink in, then, with a sigh, he goes to the other sofa and sits by Luhan’s side.
“I’m the one who should be sorry after all,” Chanyeol says and he hopes his words show how sincere he is being, “I shouldn’t have yelled at you for trying to help me stop being a cry baby after Yixing left to China. I was too blinded by how much I missed him to see that you were only giving me a helping hand.” He looks through the window. The sun is shining.
“I don’t really blame you, I mean I know how you feel,” Luhan says and when Chanyeol looks at him, he is smiling wryly, and Chanyeol remembers of Luhan’s smile glowing, an equally bright smile from a boy with tanned skin, sleepy gaze, and a heart that could open itself to receive a lot more than one could take.
A heart that took all of Luhan’s in, but it’s gone and it will never come back.
“I’m really sorry Luhan,” Chanyeol says and he feels some drops of tears forming in his eyes wiping them immediately. “You’ve been through much worse, I didn’t have the right to yell at you.”
Luhan smiles again and it hurts Chanyeol’s heart, “Don’t worry, Chanyeol. I can’t turn back time, neither I can bring Jongin back. At least, I still carry him with me everywhere I go,” He pulls out of a coin from his pocket. It’s simple, common, but to Luhan it brought memories that he keeps cherishing more by the day, “He wouldn’t want me to keep mourning for him for the rest of my life, would he?”
And Luhan is smiling wryly, sadly, but behind that same broken smile, it lies the happiness of a boy that loved.
Chanyeol averts his eyes to the floor and breathes heavy. Longing weighs too much, “I miss him, too much,” And he tries not to remember of everything, of all the good times, of when he held Yixing’s hand, when Yixing cuddled up to him when they were watching movies, when Yixing was panting and moaning his name under him.
When Yixing looked into his eyes, gaze piercing his soul, and said he loved Chanyeol for the first time.
“I know you do and he misses you as much, he just can’t come back right now,” Luhan, puts the coin back in his pocket, gets up at the end of his sentence and walks to the door, “Chanyeol, come here,”
Said man does as he is asked and walks over to where Luhan is putting his layers of clothes back on. When he is done and is already opening the door, he turns to Chanyeol and pulls out of his pocket a small simple green box. “It’s time for you to learn how to smile while someone’s away,” He takes Chanyeol’s hand and places the box on it, closing the other man’s fingers around it, “I hope to see you bright and vivid next time we meet,”
Luhan leaves with a slight wave and Chanyeol is left at his doorstep with the box on his hands. What can it be, Chanyeol wonders. Without waiting a lot more, he opens it and he thinks that his heart is going to break his ribcage. He sees the necklace he had bought to Yixing on their first date. The tears form in his eyes again, but before he breaks down, there is a piece of paper under the necklace. He takes it and he reads, “I hope to have some cake on your birthday,” It doesn’t make much sense at first, maybe Yixing would buy some cake over there to celebrate on his own. However, when Chanyeol noticed smaller characters below the message, he couldn’t help the big smile that appeared on his lips.
“P.S.: Be at Incheon, at 9 am,”
He should thank Luhan later.
