Just watched Eurovision - Not that I'm biased or anything, but the UK should've done better than that! Normally our songs kinda deserve the low points, but it was actually pretty good ( Read more... )

I haven't seen the UK's performance (just came home from theatre when Albania was... err... performing) but the little parts I heard weren't too bad. I gotta have a look at Youtube for the entire song, probably.

Anyway, the winners in my heart were Macedonia, Russia and Turkey. Turkey just because of the boat, actually xD. But Macedonia was so awesome ♥

And I'm still waiting for the day Austria will finally send someone who had an actual chance to make it to the final and not end up on the last place. xD

How shameful is it that I finished it about an hour ago, and I STILL had to go back and see which one Macedonia's entry was? It was pretty good! I think they're just all getting a bit same-y for my liking.

Turkey's boat was so cute though. And their little capes!

UK's was a lovely, sweet and pretty little tune. And WAY better than the trash we've had the last few years. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Blue? Jayzuz.

Haha not at all, that happened to me with like... 90% of the performances xD. Everything totally is the same though, unfortunately!

Awww, IKR! Too adorable :D

OH GOD, don't remind me. I'm generally NOT a fan of Andrew Lloyd Webber and that song... err... No xD. I don't think I saw Blue, though. Actually quite glad about that, though. xD

Don't feel bad though, Austria nearly never makes it to the final, so... LOL yeah we're bad too xD.

I'm not either to be honest, there's something really creepy and sinister about ALW. And his musicals aren't... that impressive? I know that's omgcontroversial, but they just never did it for me.

Blue were... mediocre. They weren't bad, but they definitely weren't good. Englebert deserved more than he got, but I was stunned that we did worse this year than last.

I'm told that Eurovision is big in Australia, but in NZ they don't even broadcast it any more. I remember them doing it when I was a kid but that was *mumblemumble* years ago.

I've heard that too - I also heard there was a bit of a hoo-hah when they tried to provide their own commentary instead of using the UK's, because Terry Wogan used to do it and get steadily more drunk as the evening went on, which was hilarious.

I think Eurovision has become more serious, but still with its little absurdities, and that's why I like it. If you can't take it seriously at all, it's hard to really root for someone, but it's still ... not the best acts in Europe.

I liked Sweden's song which ultimately won, but I would've loved to see Italy rank higher.

Moldova's dresses were super cute, I thought it was lots of fun =)

Moldova's dresses were so cute! Unfortunately just the style that wouldn't suit me at all, but they were great. And I loved the 50s-style dancing the backing singers did with the little leg flicks.

I guess you're right about it needing to be taken more seriously... I think I just look forward to it as a sort of panto each year, and I'm always disappointed when it isn't over the top and bizarre because that's what I always loved. Oh well!

I can't remember even what Sweden's song sounded like. I remember the act vaguely - she was described as being rather like Kate Bush and I could definitely see that! - but the song was totally lost on me. Looking forward to Sweden hosting though!

Haha, I think the UK used to be as well, but now it's become sort of... Kitsch? So there's a fair bit of love now.

To be honest, I'm basing my opinion on Dutch music entirely on Caro Emerald (who I love), and that song there (which I thought was really good). I can't remember many past Eurovision entries if I'm honest (unlike my brother, who downloads them to his mp3 player every year for posterity), but I don't remember there ever being anything so WTF-bizarre that it put me off!

Haha. Yeah, the lyrics aren't amazing, but the tunes are nice and I do quite like her voice, and it's good driving music - songs that you don't listen to too closely. And, shamed as I am to admit it, I like the faux-swing aspect she has going on.

She's just a welcome relief from the crud we get over here. I bought Eliza Doolittle's album because I really liked 'Pack Up', and the rest of the album is utter toss. And ugh, don't even get me started on the X-Factor and our Boy Band/Girl Band factories building Cover Machines. Very few people over here utilise the full range of musical styles available, and you just end up with a really slim selection of Pop and Synth-Pop and Dubstep (WTFever that is). DO NOT WANT.

Noah and the Whale are amazing for stuff like that - they aren't afraid to use different instruments and compositional styles, and they craft their albums as actual albums. BUT I can't listen to them all the time, (well I could, but J won't let me), so... Caro Emerald finds her way in there.
