1) Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens - dir: JJ Abrams
The perfect film to start a new year of films. It fits so perfectly with the original trilogy, and in doing so manages to make the prequels look even more farcical because they just don't fit. I loved the new characters, and really enjoyed seeing the old characters. BB-8 is adorable.
2) Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope - dir: George Lucas
So we have not watched Star Wars for YEARS because I cannot stick all the additions to the original trilogy. J has them on video, but we do not have a VCR. My parents have a VCR, so we took the videos over and hooked it up, and managed to watch the first one. Theatre original! Han-shot-first and all! It wasn't too grainy either. There was so much I had forgotten, or misordered, or edited in my memories, it was nice to watch it again.
3) The Revenant - dir: Alejandro González Iñárritu
This is exactly the sort of film J really loves, and the sort of film I usually emphatically do not. I quite enjoyed this one though, although it didn't grip me and if I'd been watching it at home I might have turned it off. It was so long! But I liked the light touch on the storytelling and all the beautiful cinematography. I don't think it was DiCaprio's strongest acting role though, because he didn't have to act much? His face was mostly hidden by hair and/or fur, and he mostly just did a lot of heavy breathing and gritting his teeth. He is SO GOOD at subtle acting, i.e. in The Great Gatsby, or Django Unchained, and this didn't get any of that. Eh.
