Here is a student documentary including interviews with me, Bucker Fuskyote, and David Scarlet, all of whom are Furries. Explains a bit about what being a furry is about, and about why public perceptions have been skewed by the media.

Who's the cute spotty cat at 2:30? It's not Jabari, right?

But yeah, I think you nailed the problem with your observation that, while any media outlet may be looking for anything with "shock value," some of the furries, with their fearful lashing out at said outlets, aren't doing themselves (or the rest of the fandom) any favors. Even in this piece--I'm not sure I've never heard the Furry Fandom being described as being "Satanic"; in fact, any religious affiliation tends to be frowned upon by other members. So, there's still some confusion on both sides of the fence/velvet rope/convention hall. But I think you provided a fair discussion of some of the things involved.
Heh, and that was the first time I'd seen any part of that "CSI" episode since the first time I saw it in 2003. I recognized at least one furr in that snippet! And he's still a furr in good standing, last I saw him. XD
