Blind

I have told her what I look like. Running her hands over my face, I describe the features. Round nose. Widely set eyes. Not a very strong jaw. When she touches the rest of my body, I do not describe it: she can know that for herself.

I tell her what my hair is like, and when I’m having a good day. Sometimes I tell her about the clothes I’m wearing. She smiles and her eyes move; she likes it when I wear loose collared shirts.

I wonder how I look in her mind’s eye. Have I described myself perfectly? Or does she imagine me a little prettier, with a wider smile, or more pronounced cheekbones? Does she even care, or has she not formed an image of me?

From the bed I can see a mirror. Making love, I sometimes catch a glimpse of her, and myself. I look for both of us. I want to look good even though she can’t see me; I owe it her. But when her hand rakes over my stomach, and she kisses my shoulder-neck through her hair, I realise that her way - her vision - is clearer, is purer, more direct and intense. I breathe in her taste, touch her skin, and close my eyes.
