Considering 2012 is a quarter over, this post is way overdue. But I've been distracted. So here's everything I read and watched last year.

Books:
1. The Mistress of Nothing, Kate Pullinger
2. The 4 Percent Universe, Richard Panek
3. Reality is Broken, Jane McGonigal
4. The Tell-Tale Brain, V.S. Ramachdran
5. The Last Greatest Magician in the World, Jim ( Read more... )

I confess that when I briefly saw the Supergirl thing (and I'm pretty sure I caught it on a 30 second Youtube clip, so my context was lacking), I thought it was a brief goof on her invulnerability, rather than a silly girly thing. Like Superman dusting himself off after being knocked through a building to remind us that he's invulnerable, Supergirl fights Darkseid and the worst he can manage is: "I broke a nail." Different strokes, though.

As for clothing, I really don't pay that much attention, but every time I get dragged to a mall and pass women's clothing stores, the stuff up front is fairly revealing. Perhaps it's just honest? I don't recall seeing that bit personally, so there may be something in context that makes it more than, "Well, Clark's ignorant about what women actually wear, so he just throws her in and she gets what's available. Kids today."

Holy cow it's a Dave! I haven't heard for you in ages.

In the film she and Superman both got pretty pummeled, do the point of bruises and bleeding. It was just a silly girly thing.

The thing that irked me about the shopping is the idea that that's all she'd be interested in. I mean if I landed on another planet or for that matter was showing my alien cousin around my planet I'd take them to the best museums and landmarks and show them about human culture. It's an issue that's far from unique to the movie. I've heard dozens of commercials break things down along the lines of "If you get faster Internet for your home Johnny can use it to research his science project and Susie can use it to chat with her friends about boys" or the husband saying "I just saved money on car insurance!" and the wife saying "That's great. I'm going to buy new shoes." I'll admit as a woman I'm more incensed by such things than I'd assume you'd be.

Ah, now I get it. I thought it was to get her stuff she'd need. Non-alien clothes, toiletries, and assorted sundries. Yeah, that's kinda tacky.

Although if you were a deliberately bland thirty-something white male and your deeply out of town 16 year old girl cousin showed up, where would you take her? I don't know that I'd have much in common with somebody half my own age. (Yet another reason to stay the hell out of peds.)

ETA: My real beef with Supergirl is that she's essentially the number 2 female in the DC Universe. And yet, the best the authors can do is: "Just like the other guy, but in a skirt". Seriously. Could we either do something with her backstory (raised by oppressed ethnic group, landed in North Korea, interested in remaking humanity in her image) or give her a different powerset? (Marvel has a whole list of non-stupid things to crib from - EM spectrum mastery, gravity control, matter transmutation, teleport/walk through walls, part of a hivemind, something.)
