4x15 Fire in the Hole

Chandler Mulvaney is tied, standing up, to a round, iron structure. He is bloody, sweaty, panting and shirtless. A man stands before him with a bloody knife. He is taunting Chandler and talking about Dean, and then his eyes turn white - it is Alistair. He tells Chandler that he has been abandoned by the angels, that they led Alistair right to him, and ponders what Chandler could have done to warrant this punishment. The scene ends with Alistair resuming Chandler’s torture, and Chandler screaming.

Sam and Dean are in the car. They have identified a series of demonic omens near Memphis and are headed there to check it out. They think Lilith could be trying to break another seal. Anna appears in the back seat of the car. She says she needs their help, and when Dean says they’re on their way to Memphis, she says that’s where she needs them to go.

Anna brings them to an abandoned warehouse. She can’t get in, she says, and then we see that the building is covered in anti-angel symbols. She tells them that she’s been trying to find out more about the ongoing war between demons and angels, and that she thinks something isn’t right. When they press her about it, she is reluctant to say more, saying that she doesn’t know enough yet. She had help, though - Chandler Mulvaney has been helping her. She lost track of him two days ago, and she thinks he might be in the warehouse. The Winchesters enter the warehouse and discover a horrific scene - Chandler is dead, hanging on the iron structure. Sam discovers sulfur on the floor, verifying that demons did this. The Winchesters take Chandler down and cover him up.

At a motel room, Anna is freaking out. Dean is on the phone with Bobby, and Sam comes into the room, hanging up his phone. Dean hangs up too, and Sam says he left messages for Frannie and Charlie both to call right away. Anna says something is horribly wrong here. It’s clear to her that Chandler discovered something he wasn’t supposed to. About Lilith? Dean asks, but Anna shakes her head and then disappears.

Later, Sam and Dean are both sleeping when someone jumps on top of Dean. He starts awake and a woman’s voice tells him to be quiet. It’s Frannie, and she slides her hands down Dean, to his alarm, and comes away with Ruby’s knife. Sam starts to rise from his bed but a shotgun pumps - Charlie has it trained on them. Dean says what the hell, are they going to shoot them? Charlie says it’s just rock salt, and yes, he will shoot them. Sam starts to try to tell them about Chandler but Frannie tells him to shut up. Sam flips on the light and it’s clear both Frannie and Charlie have been crying - they know about Chandler. They back out of the room, Ruby’s knife in Frannie’s hand.

The Winchesters are back in the Impala, Dean driving and Sam on the phone. Sam hangs up and announces that Frannie didn’t turn her phone GPS off, and Bobby’s tracking her online. He wonders why she wouldn’t turn it off, and Dean says that she wants them to find her. Or doesn’t care if they do, Sam says grimly. Dean wonders what the Mulvaneys think they’re doing. From the backseat, Castiel suddenly answers that they are tracking Alistair. Dean pulls over, yelling at Castiel for appearing like that. He turns to look at the angel and asks if Alistair did that to Chandler. Castiel says yes, then says he is sorry, that Chandler was a good man. Why, Sam wants to know, and Castiel looks confounded. He doesn’t know what Alistair wanted with Chandler, he says, and Dean says a little birdie told him that something’s amiss on the battlefield and asks for some enlightenment about what’s going on. Castiel looks troubled - he’s clearly been wondering that himself. Then he says that whatever is happening, now the Winchesters need to catch up with the Mulvaneys and find Alistair. Sam tells Castiel that Frannie has Ruby’s knife, but that it didn’t work in the past on Alistair. Exactly, Castiel says and disappears.

The Mulvaneys’ truck is at a gas station pump. Inside the gas station, Frannie is knifing a demon in the back. Charlie is panting and standing over another body. Frannie’s phone ring and she snaps it open in annoyance.

It’s Dean, and he says they’re on their way, just wait, he and Sam will help them with Alistair. Frannie says they don’t need help, and Dean says she doesn’t know about Alistair and the knife, Before he can finish, a demon pops up from behind the counter, grabs Charlie by the hair and yanks him backward on the counter. The demon has a hand-ax in his hand, and we see it raise, then come back up bloody. Frannie screams Charlie’s name. The phone drops to the floor. Dean’s voice is yelling, “Frannie! What’s happening?” while we hear a struggle. Blood spills onto the floor by the phone. In the background, we see Frannie’s feet leaving the building, alone.

Sam and Dean are in the gas station crouched down by Charlie’s body. They stand slowly and look around the wrecked room, at the three other bodies there. Dean bends down and picks up Frannie’s discarded phone. Sam shakes his head - they’ve lost their way to track her. Through the window, we see Bobby’s Chevelle pull up, and he comes into the building. He takes his hat off when he sees Charlie’s body. Sam shows him the phone, and Bobby sighs. He says he doesn’t know how Frannie is tracking Alistair, but he’s guessing this mess in the gas station means she’s on the right track. If they can’t find her, he says, they should try to find Alistair and beat her there. Bobby has brought the demon-tracking device from No Rest for the Wicked, and they pile into their cars and set off for Alistair.

Alistair is in a church, looking at a stained glass window of the holy Mother and Child. The church is under construction, scaffolding and equipment everywhere. Frannie, blood-covered and red-eyed, comes up behind him. Alistair tells her that he likes churches, the serenity and solemnity. He turns, and we see Ruby’s knife in Frannie’s hand. Alistair smiles and asks if she thinks she’s going to kill him with that little toy. Frannie says probably not, and then dives at him.

Bobby and the Winchesters burst into the church to see Alistair pulling the knife from his heart. Frannie turns and runs and Alistair is on her in a moment. He lifts the knife and stabs her twice in the belly. He taunts her for her foolishness, and she smiles in triumph, telling him she’s foolish, not stupid. She looks up, and Alistair’s eyes follow hers - a large sheet of plywood hangs above them with other construction equipment, and on it is a Devil’s Trap. Alistair is infuriated, and moves to stab her again, but Dean grabs hold of Frannie’s collar and pulls her out from the trap while Sam snatches the knife from Alistair’s hand.

Dean cradles Frannie while Sam whips out his phone, but Frannie shakes her head at Sam. Too late, she tells him, and the brothers look down to see blood everywhere. Frannie tells Dean that she left Alistair for him, and to make it count. Dean promises her that he will. Then she says that Chandler found something out, she has to tell them. She stops and Dean asks her what it is. Frannie says, “The angels,” and then dies.

Castiel appears behind them, looking sad. Bobby asks him isn’t he going to do something? Castiel doesn’t answer, but reaches a hand out toward Alistair, still inside the trap. In a flash of light, they both are gone.

In the final scene, the Winchesters and Bobby are burning three wrapped bodies. They don’t say anything.

Quotes

Alistair: What did you do, hm? A man of God, abandoned to the hands of a demon by God’s own angels. That has to sting.
Chandler: God has not abandoned me.
Alistair: Looks that way from where I’m standing. I’ll check back in a bit, see if you feel differently about it.

Dean: Alistair did that? To Chandler?
Castiel: Yes. I am sorry. I know he was your friend. He was a good man.

Dean: She’s (Frannie) gonna get herself killed.
Sam: I think that’s the idea, Dean.

Sam: Is this the best idea? Trying to find Alistair, after what happened last time?
Bobby: No. It’s a lousy idea. So let’s get to it.

Frannie (to Dean): I left Alistair for you. Make it count.
Dean: I will. You know I will.
Frannie: Chandler found something out, he found out ...
Dean: What? What is it, Frannie?
Frannie: The angels ...
