Breastfeeding & Adopt-a-mom

Nov 23, 2009 21:03

So I wasn't going to, but I've decided to write my "nursing story" because it's a requirement in order to be a mentor for adopt-a-mom (mother-to-mother online breastfeeding support). I started to in July, but got irritated that I HAD to do it in order to be a mentor, and then decided maybe I didn't want to be an official mentor anyway ( Read more... )

I'll be coming back to this post! :) I actually also plan on attending the weekly breasfeeding support group at the hospital post-birth (and it's FREE!). :) Thank you for the info!

I know it itches you from a privacy perspective, but it makes good sense that they require a story, and that they require it be public. As you say over and over above, there's so much pressure and shame and invisibility about this. Public stories, bearing witness, letting women see each other, is the only way to break through that.

Also, if you're going to be an officially endorsed mentor, someone will be taking you as a trusted authority. They want to make very sure you're going to be willing to talk about it and have your head screwed on straight about what kind of advice to give. Otherwise someone could be very quiet and private and then give horrible advice like your MIL got.

Congrats on deciding to do this! Someone will be very lucky to have your support.

That is an awesome post. Just wanted to say. :)

It's funny - anytime I read about breastfeeding mothers I get so jealous. (Before I had Emii I'd planned to BF for as long as she'd wanted.. it's something I'd always wanted to do for my child.) But, I have flat/inverted nipples and wasn't able to, so I pumped for my daughter but no matter how much/often I pumped or took fenugreek pills my supply tanked within two months of her birth.

I do wish I had more help with it at the time, but if I do have another child, armed with the knowledge I found out after I had Emii, I will try harder, and use other methods to try and breastfeed.

But just wanted to say:

Good job, Momma! :)
