Atobe frowned. What he was supposed to be seeing was a first class doubles match between Hyoutei’s best and brightest, but what he was seeing presently was Choutarou repeatedly double faulting and Oshitari sweeping the game single handedly. This travesty had to end. Now.
"Stop this nonsense. Oshitari, Shishido, get a drink then go practice your slices. Mukahi, 50 laps for being lazy. Ohtori, I need to talk to you," It was good to be king. Gakuto and Shishido had a few profanity laden complaints, but followed their captains orders regardless.
"I don’t know what Atobe's talking about, my slice is perfect," Shishido complained.
"Mmhmm. I’m sure it is," Oshitari responded without making eye contact, though there was a taunting smirk on his face.
"What the hell does that mean?!"
Choutarou listened to his sempai’s banter until the two were out of earshot, then took a deep breath.
"Damn it…" he whispered airily before turning around to see his captain waiting for him, looking displeased.
"Ohtori. I was promised immaculate Scud Serves. Care to explain?" Atobe’s gaze was very demanding.
"I'm sorry, My Scud Serve is polished…I'm just stressed…and it's affecting my game."
"Ohtori you know you’re supposed to leave baggage at the door and just play."
Choutarou clenched his fist, Atobe's words were making him angry.
"Yes Atobe-Buchou" Choutarou sighed and relaxed his hands, he was taken by surprise when Atobe placed a hand on his shoulder.
"Go get a drink, then take a few cool down laps. After that you can do some one on one exercises with Shishido." Hyoutei’s captain still looked very serious, but Choutarou couldn’t help but smile. Atobe really was quite nice sometimes.
"Yes, Buchou!"
---
"Oshitari can go ahead and fuck himself…my slices are perfect," Shishido took a long sip of his water. What was supposed to be practice quickly turned into a one up competition, and Oshitari's relaxed attitude pissed off Shishido to no end. Thank god Gakuto had basically pranced up to Yuushi complaining about how Atobe is mean or unfair or some other bullshit and Yuushi had to leave practice to tend to his little princess. Shishido Snorted.
"Shishido-San!" Shishido saw his own doubles partner come bounding up to him looking considerably more lively than he had before.
"Hey Choutarou! How was the chat with 'his majesty'?" Shishido sat down on the bench at the edge of the courts and motioned for his partner to join him. Choutarou complied.
"Oh, Buchou? It was fine, he wants us to practice together," Choutarou helped himself to some of Shishido's water, he knew it would be offered to him in a matter of moments anyway.
"And we will. 'ventaully," The shorter boy looked at the ground for a moment. He could tell Choutarou wasn’t his usual self lately. Just going about addressing it was…hard.
"Hey, Choutarou…has something been going on lately? You seem upset…" Shishido was quickly cut off.
"Yes, It’s affecting my game, I know. But I…"
"I'm not worried about your damn game Choutarou! I’m worried about you," Choutarou was almost taken aback by Shishido’s vigor, but he knew the boy far to well to be surprised.
"…Thank you Shishido-san. I'm okay really, just…My father's…My father's business isn't doing so well right now, and that's my family's main source of income, so it's just a little stressful you know? I just overheard something today about my tuition being in question so I was just a little unnerved toda-"
"Your tuition?! You mean you might not be able to come to Hyoutei anymore?" Shishido was fully aware that that’s what he meant, but he just asked without thinking.
"Maybe…Though I talked to Sakaki-Sensei and he said he’d try to work something out if it were to happen, I might not have to leave," As Choutarou spat out his response talking a mile a minute Shishido felt like he was the one being comforted.
"You're pretty invaluable to Sakaki…I’m sure he'll work something out…" The fact that words were failing Shishido pissed him off to enormous extents. He wanted to be there for Choutarou. Then, suddenly, he realized…
"Hey! You know what? It’s your birthday soon right?"
"Yeah…" Choutarou’s response sounded cautious, though he certainly didn’t want it to sound that way.
"Let's do something special together, I mean, we are best friends! Just name it and it's done!” Shishido was nothing short of exuberant as he extended the offer to his friend.
"Oh, I couldn't Shishido-san…"
"Don’t start that bullshit Choutarou, We're going out!” A little color rose to Choutarou’s cheeks partly because he stated that they 'were going out' but mostly because the way Shishido's voice sounded so passionate when he said it. He stared at Shishido who obviously didn’t realize the way he made things sound.
"Okay Shishido-san, you win. Why don’t we have dinner?"
"Done! I'll go make some reservations, since practice is basically over anyways. See ya later Choutarou!" Shishido started racing off, he had some serious sucking up to do to Atobe and couldn't waste a minute.
"Reservations?" Choutarou whispered to himself. By dinner Choutarou meant something more casual…maybe even at one of their houses, not some fancy restaurant.
"Shishido-san, wait!" Choutarou yelled after him, but Shishido was the fastest boy on Hyoutei and was long gone.
Choutarou really didn't want to trouble Shishido that much, any dinner with him would’ve been great. Though, perhaps a 'nice' dinner wouldn’t be so bad. Choutarou was already looking forward to really going out, instead of just going to a diner. This was more like a date, though it made Choutarou blush to think about it. He was so unsure of his feelings towards his sempai…but spending any sort of time with him sounded great. And it’d be fun to let Shishido take him somewhere special. Choutarou smiled. He decided that he was extremely excited for this. He’d get to spend time with his best friend and eat some good food. Just the two of us, Choutarou mused, it's gonna be special.
---
When Choutarou heard his doorbell ring, he noticed it was about 5:10. Shishido was early. Which was certainly a first. Choutarou quickly glanced in the mirror to make sure everything was in place, and then went to go let Shishido inside. When he opened the door he failed to restrain a giggle.
"Oh, shut up Choutarou," Shishido pouted, though there was a hint of a smile tugging at the corner of his lips.
"I'm not laughing at you…you look very handsome," he stated playfully. Shishido had obviously been…Atobe'd, to put it simply. He was dressed in what looked like to be an extremely expensive suit, and his hair was styled. Styled with some sort of product. And the last clue that Atobe managed to dress the boy was the fact that he smelled like Atobe, or at least Atobe's pointlessly expensive cologne. Even though it was quite amusing, Shishido really did look handsome.
"Shishido-san, is that a limo?" Choutarou could see the headlights of a very impressive looking vehicle over Shishido's head. Choutarou only received an 'uh' as a response.
"Did Atobe…?"
"Well, We sure as hell couldn't have walked to the restaurant, especially in these clothes. But, uh, let's just go, okay?"
"Where are we going, Shishido-san?" Choutarou shivered a bit as he went outside, it was much more brisk than he expected.
"Some Foreign place, can’t pronounce the name, But I know you like that kind of stuff. It’s Italian, and you like that right?"
"I do, it was thoughtful of you to bring me somewhere so fancy, Shishido-san," Shishido mumbled something. Choutarou giggled and Shishido smiled, but both would deny it if asked. The limo came to a slow casual stop, and the boys exited to enter the quaint looking restaurant. As Shishido gave a bus girl their reservations the girl giggled and had the stupidest grin (according to Shishido) on her face. She brought them to their table, which was in the darker side of the restaurant, and giggled again as she left. Shishido was, to put it plainly, weirded out.
"That chick was strange, wasn't she?" Shishido stated with trace amounts of concern in his voice.
"Seemed pleasant to me," Choutarou smiled and shrugged his shoulders. He really wanted this time for some quality 'sempai-watching' though unfortunately the menu had quite a bit of English in it, and it required more attention than he wanted to give it. Which was good, because Shishido was partaking in some 'kouhai-watching' and would have felt really awkward if noticed, because he really hadn't admitted to himself that he was kouhai-watching. He also hadn’t admitted how cute Choutarou was when he was thinking very hard about something; as a matter of fact Shishido was so busy not admitting things that he had no idea what he wanted to eat by the time the waitress, whom was just as giggly as the previous girl, came to take their order. So he picked what was easiest to pronounce and hoped it tasted good.
"..I really can’t get over this, Shishido-san. No one’s ever done something so special for me, I really can’t thank you eno-"
"Don't say stuff like that Choutarou, it's lame. You’re my friend, so we do shit together, right?" Choutarou could see the faintest hint of a blush on Shishido's face, it made him smile and he probably looked a little silly. Shishido was going to say something, but than their waitress came back with some breadsticks and water and a smile that was much, much more stupid looking than any face Choutarou could make while actively trying. Shishido was getting angry, he glared at the waitress until she skipped away…but she whispered to some other waitress pointing towards his and Choutarou's table and the giggled even more. Shishido was really getting livid at this point. What the hell was with everyone in this restaurant. He bent over slightly looking at Choutarou, who was pleasantly nibbling on a roll.
"Choutarou, what the hell is up with these waitresses? They don’t stop giggling at us? What the hell are we doing that’s so damn funny?!" Shishido's voice was a barely audible hiss. All of sudden Choutarou looked quite embarrassed. He hadn’t noticed the waitresses as much as Shishido did, but he knew someone was bound to look at them, they were teenage boys eating out on Valentines Day. But, knowing Shishido, he had probably forgotten.
"Well, it is Valentines Day after all, they probably think we’re on a, ya know, a date or something," Shishido gaped and Choutarou gave his full attention to his roll.
"Shishido-san…?"
Shishido was in a state of semi shock. A date? It all made perfect sense. It was Valentines Day, but he simply didn’t realize it before. People thought that they- two middle school boys- were on a date together. Which, he supposed, it technically was. Shishido Ryou was on a Date with Ohtori Choutarou. And he kind of liked it.
"Ah…s'pose I was too into your birthday to remember it was Valentines Day.
That was lame of me," Shishido wouldn’t make eye contact with Choutarou and grabbed a roll to give his attention to following Choutarou's act. Though, Choutarou was actually a little disappointed in Shishido's reaction. He seemed embarrassed about the situation. He was hoping he might be more comfortable with it, so maybe he could get a kiss later. Choutarou was fantasizing about what a kiss with Shishido would be like when the food arrived. Shishido seemed truthfully interested in trying to figure out what he ordered, and didn’t seem to notice Choutarou's fantasizing, and he didn’t seem all that embarrassed anymore either.
"…I've got some sort of scallop and some sort of pasta. Seems edible enough….oh, this is good. Might be worth its ridiculous price tag…" Shishido was eating his food, well, like a teenage boy and it looked rather out of place in the high-class establishment.
"My food is good too, and I suppose there is a reason why people would spend so much money on it, although manicotti is basically just cheese…though what you have Shishido-san looks really good."
"Want some?" Choutarou blinked as Shishido held out the fork, which had already been acquainted with his mouth, which had an even amount of samples from his plate. Choutarou's first though was to let Shishido have his food as to not trouble him, but his second thought was screw it. He leaned in to the table to close his mouth over the fork (that had been in Shishido's mouth) and let himself linger there for a moment or two before pulling back.
"Oh, that is delicious, Shishido-san," Choutarou hoped he was giving a good performance, because he honestly had no idea what the food actually tasted like. His mind was a tad preoccupied. Although the food was very good and both boys enjoyed their dinner, (probably a little too much for the surrounding company. Middle school boys could make a bit of noise) Shishido was ecstatic to be out of the restaurant. His tie was off the second he was out of the door.
"That’s so like you, Shishido-san" Choutarou chuckled a bit as Shishido attempt to muss his hair to its normal state.
"It was too fancy in there. Honestly, who the hell were all those people trying to impress with thousand dollar outfits?" Shishido scoffed as he pulled off the coat of his suit and swung it over his shoulder.
"Who were you trying to impress?" Shishido could feel heat rising to his cheeks as a small, coy grin spread on Choutarou's face.
"Oh, shut up…So, what do you want do now? Whatever you want. 'ts your birthday after all…" And Shishido made that embarrassed look again that made Choutarou frown just a little bit.
"Anything you want to do Shishido-san? I know you're doing this for me, and I am very flattered, but the restaurant was very Shishido-y, you know?" Shishido was ready to protest, but Choutarou had a look in his eyes; a look that was painfully familiar to the look he made the second before a scud serve.
"You know what, fine. I could kill for some ice cream right now. Want me to call the limo guy?"
"Is it okay if we don’t? The air is so nice tonight, and I like spending time with you. There’s an ice cream place near here, right?" Shishido's feet actually hurt quite a bit from the stupid shoes Atobe shoved onto him, and he would love to just sit down, but he figured it was worth it to see Choutarou's eyes so bright.
"Prob’ly. We’ll find a place 'ventaully anyways." It was quiet at first when they began to walk. Shishido found the silence was awkward. Choutarou didn’t mind it though; he really liked the overall feeling of walking with Shishido, just the two of them and the glow of the city lights. It felt…Choutarou hesitated to describe it as so, but, romantic. It was just like a date.
"You know? I really like this…the whole thing, dinner and everything, but this walk might be my favorite part of our date!" Choutarou gasped, wondering how he just let his thoughts spill out like that. Shishido just stared at him.
"Oh Shishido-san, I didn’t meant it like, you know, oh…."
"You thought this was a date? Like, a date date?" Shishido looked at Choutarou with inquiring eyes, though he didn’t seem a bit frustrated.
"Well, in my head…yeah. Is that weird for you Shishido-san? Because even if you…you know,… I still want to be friends an-"
"I think we both knew that was a date…I’m just seriously in denial, how lame…So, uh, maybe we could do this again though? You seem to want to, so uh, would you like that?"
"Really, Shishido-san? So…you’re my boyfriend now?" Choutarou looked excited as well as almost timid. The colors of the lights made him look vibrant. His lips were an enticing pink color (though that could’ve been the lights,) and the boy himself looked all too enticing. Choutarou had gasped again when Shishido had grabbed his shoulders but he was quickly silenced by the shorter boys mouth. Both boys couldn’t help but grab on to each other, feeling each other, their kiss getting more and more intense as the pent up feelings simply exploded. They both eventually pulled away, although their bodies were still pulled close together.
"Fuck the ice cream, Shishido-san?" Choutarou couldn’t help but smile from ear to ear and Shishido let out lively laughter.
'Fuck the ice cream indeed. And no more 'san', okay? We’re closer than that, now come on! I know for a fact my parents won’t be home all night! Race ya!" Shishido quickly sped away, Choutarou right on his heels both of them laughing jubilantly. Just them and the city lights.
