My microwave broke down too this week! WTF? (Replacing it was far more of a hassle than I'd expected: I went to Target, and bought the single model of microwave they apparently carry, then realized once I'd got it home that it was much smaller than our current model. After pondering my options, today I went to Warner Stellian, but they don't actually have microwaves at the showroom you can buy; you have to take your invoice over to their warehouse at Como and Dale to pick it up, and it takes a long time for them to actually get it off the shelf and to your car. Next time, I will probably order from Amazon and get two-day shipping, srsly, because my desire to support local businesses does not extend to infinite patience with their preference that I run all over town if I actually want a microwave oven TODAY.)

Did you go to Target on Lake? I browsed the Target near my work for microwaves, and they had 5 or 6 different models, so it might be that the one you were at just had a shitty selection.

New formica was only $60? Wow. It looks great! And I love the black sink. I always thought countertops were more expensive than that, but then I tend to want the fancy aggregate granite-glass stuff. But even the cheapest formica would be an upgrade at this point. And I have a weird horseshoe-shaped counter with built-in rangetop as well as the sink, so it's going to be more expensive when we finally do it. Maybe I should talk to your handyman. I really, really hate our kitchen. The oven hasn't been the same since Chris and I set it on fire. Can he fix broken drawers? Because I'd pay someone to do that. We've had two broken drawers for the last two years, and it's so ghetto!

I have a single, straight countertop that is just under 10 feet long, so I was able to pick up this prefab formica, and didn't have to special order anything. They have two other colors of prefab formica - they are both $104 for the 10 foot piece. I actually wanted the lightest color countertop of the three, as that would go best with what I want to do with the look of the kitchen. If I'd liked either of the other two colors better, I would have sprung for the additional $46. Is the horseshoe shaped counter round, or is it squared off corners? If the latter, you might be able to replace it with the prefab pieces - they have some pieces to do corners. If it's rounded, you'll probably have to special order, but formica isn't really that much

The corners are square. The thing that makes it more complicated and expensive is the built-in range top and the built-in sink. Though I suppose, since I need to replace both, it's probably easier to fit a new stovetop into a new countertop than trying to mix and match new and old. I wonder if he could fix the two broken drawers? The tracks are broken. My main problem in trying to fix those was accessibility, so it's theoretically possible that someone with cabinet skills could fix the drawers while the countertops were off. Just doing that much + a nice tile backsplash would probably cost under $1000 and would make me hate my kitchen much less. That would be a good place to start. The oven, the floor and the range hood could then wait for another day. Unless I have to do the range hood before the backsplash.

This sounds expensive. :(
