~This is ridiculous.~

~Quiet Dark~ Daisuke thought back absently, most of his attention on the clicking dials beneath his fingers. ~I’m trying to concentrate.~

Dark ignored him entirely. ~No guards, no traps, no cameras,~ he lamented. ~They might as well have gift-wrapped this statuette, they’re making it so easy to steal.~

Daisuke rolled his eyes. ~I hardly call several dozen different locks between the front door and the statue easy, Dark.~

~It is for me!~ Dark sounded mightily offended. ~I’m the great Phantom Thief, Dark Mousey! What does that Hikari think he’s doing trying to keep a thief out with locks?~

~We’re not technically ‘you’ right now, if that helps,~ offered Daisuke, tugging on a long red strand of his hair for emphasis.

It was amazing how well Dark could convey exasperated arm waving when he didn’t have any arms. ~That’s not the point! This whole thing is completely beneath my dignity!~

~…good thing I’m doing all the work then, huh?~

~Eh.~ Dark brushed off Daisuke’s sarcasm dismissively. ~It’s about time you did some work in this partnership anyway. And you like picking locks, remember?~

~I’m good at picking locks,~ Daisuke corrected. ~That doesn’t mean I wanted to spend the night trying my hand at every kind of lock ever designed by man. I have a math test tomorrow, you know.~

Dark sniffed. ~That’s hardly my fault.~ He was silent for a moment, watching Daisuke’s fingers rolling deftly over the dials, then; ~Do you suppose Hiwatari didn’t get my note?~

Daisuke couldn’t help chuckling at the worry in Dark’s voice. ~I’m sure he got your note,~ he placated, grunting in satisfaction as the next tumbler slid into place. ~No one would go to this much effort for a regular security system.~

~That’s probably true,~ Dark mused. ~Although it’s still a big waste of effort. And you had it right the first time,~ he offered, as Daisuke hesitated over the final dial.

Nodding in understanding, Daisuke spun the dial back and tried the door handle. The clack of the bolt was loud in the echoing confines of the manor and Daisuke got up gratefully from his uncomfortable crouch.

~Shall we?~ he asked.

The sensation of Dark shrugging tingled through his shoulders. ~Better than sitting here,~ Dark observed. ~Although I won’t be held responsible for my actions if we run into any more locked doors.~

Daisuke shook his head and slipped carefully into the next room, attention arrested almost immediately by the waist-high pedestal set in the middle of the floor, a delicate glass figurine sparkling on top. There was nothing else in the room.

~And the damn thing’s right out in the open,~ Dark complained. ~Is it too much to ask for even one measly little guard?~

~…only you would complain about things being too easy.~ Daisuke began approaching the pedestal carefully, wary despite Dark’s complaints.

~Boring Daisuke. The word you’re looking for is boring.~

“I’m impressed,” a voice echoed out of the darkness. “You got here even faster than expected.”

“Gah!” Daisuke whirled with a wide-eyed flail, half-tripping over his own feet and stumbling heavily back against the pedestal. The figurine on top wobbled precariously, but remained upright.

~… do you practice being so pathetically useless or is it a natural talent?~

~Daarrrrkkkk…~

~What? I’m just asking.~

Shadows rippled as Hiwatari-kun stepped forward, pale hair practically glowing in the dim light. “I thought you handled the Egyptian scarab lock especially well.”

“Um, thanks?” Daisuke tried.

Hiwatari-kun nodded, making no move to attack.

~What’s going on, Dark?~

~You got me Daisuke. I think the great Commander Hiwatari’s finally flipped his gourd.~

Hiwatari-kun moved closer and Daisuke back-pedaled reflexively, nearly knocking the pedestal over in his haste to escape. Heavy granite thudded against the ground as the pedestal righted itself, a moment too late to keep the statuette from tipping over and tumbling headlong towards the tiled floor.

~Shit!~

“Ack!”

Daisuke dove, skidding on his stomach and stretching out his hands to catch the piece before it smashed. His chin scraped on the floor, back bent at an awkward angle as he twisted round the pedestal half on his side with one arm trapped painfully beneath his chest. The figurine fell into his outstretched fingers and Daisuke he lay on the floor for a long moment, heart pounding with belated concern.

~Nice catch. Might want to work on your form though.~

“Phew,” Daisuke breathed, sitting up to lean against the pedestal. “That was close.”

“Oh,” said Hiwatari-kun offhandedly, closer now than Daisuke remembered him being. “You can keep that if you like.”

Daisuke blinked, statuette cradled in gloved hands.

“It’s a replica,” Hiwatari-kun told him, with exaggerated patience. “I had the real one removed while you were busy with the rotating hourglass lock on the front door.”

Dark started swearing and Daisuke gaped incredulously at Hiwatari-kun’s calm countenance.

“Wait, but then you… what, I mean, why…”

“Why all the trouble of the locked doors?” Hiwatari-kun supplied, eyebrow quirking at Daisuke’s emphatic nod. “I’m surprised you haven’t figured it out by now.”

Light flashed on round glasses, skittering across the shadowy walls and suddenly Hiwatari-kun was in front of him, feet braced wide and body looming over him with deadly intent.

Daisuke froze and Dark went very quiet inside of him. For Krad to show up now…

But all Hiwatari-kun did was reach out, slim fingers surprisingly gentle as they cupped Daisuke’s sore chin. Daisuke responded instinctively to the light pressure of that hold, tilting his head up to blink into Hiwatari-kun’s midnight blue eyes. Those eyes were trained on him with all the intensity Daisuke had come to expect from Hiwatari-kun, but before he could make up his mind to shy away Hiwatari-kun moved again, sealing his mouth against Daisuke’s in a searing kiss.

Daisuke whimpered in surprise, mind reeling as Hiwatari-kun pressed him back against the pedestal, the hard stone leeching the heat from his skin right through his clothing. Hiwatari-kun took his time with the kiss, tongue sweeping through Daisuke’s mouth with a taste like fire and ice. There was a hard edge to the languid sweeps of his tongue, dangerous and aloof even as he continued to cradle Daisuke’s chin with a care that approached reverence. Completely out of his depth, Daisuke grabbed the front of Hiwatari-kun’s dress shirt and hung on for dear life, unable to hear if Dark was speaking to him over the rush of blood through his veins.

“Ah.” Hiwatari-kun’s smile when he drew back was nearly as sharp as his kiss. “To be honest, Niwa, I just like watching you pick locks.” He leaned in close, breath ghosting across Daisuke’s flushed cheeks. “Perhaps next time I should test your ability with knots instead.”

Cold prickled along Daisuke’s front as Hiwatari-kun straightened and stepped back, every inch the composed, patient Commander once again. He turned, raising one hand in a desultory farewell. “I’ll see you in class tomorrow, Niwa.”

Daisuke stared blankly as the door swung shut behind Hiwatari-kun, wondering what had just happened.

~You alright there, Daisuke?~

Daisuke started to nod, then changed his mind and got his head caught wobbling somewhere in the middle. ~What was that?~

~I believe it’s usually referred to as a kiss,~ Dark drawled, sounding far too amused for Daisuke’s good. ~A pretty damn good one too, by the look of it.~

Daisuke made a face. ~Why are you never any help?~

~Because you’re cute when you’re freaking out?~

~Gee, thanks.~ Standing on shaky legs, Daisuke tottered towards the door then stopped, a strange expression twisting his face. ~Um, Dark?~

~Yeah, Daisuke?~

Daisuke looked worriedly at the closed door in front of him. ~I think we’re locked in.~

~…that Hikari is DEAD.~
