Moving on
Sanji lit the candles and surveyed the table for the umpteenth time. Everything had to be perfect for tonight; he wouldn't have it any other way.
The table was so full of food it had to be bending over under the combined weight of pork joints, every single kind of fish available--and there were a lot of fish available--, exotic fruits, lots of salads and sauces of every colour in the rainbow. There was a keg of crappy sake in one corner and lots of bottles of good wine already opened and breathing.
And of course, the cola. Let's not forget the cola.
Sanji nodded to himself satisfied with his job and sat in his usual place to wait, lighting a cigarette and inhaling the smoke deeply. He looked at his hand, it was shaking. "He'll come," he said to no one in particular.
Zoro was the first one to arrive. He had always been the first one.
Without a word he took his seat, the one closest to the sake, and turned to look at the door.
"He'll come," he said after a few minutes of tense silence, then he grabbed the sake and started drinking.
Nami and Usopp arrived a bit later, bickering among themselves and taking their usual places immediately. None of them touched the food, they didn't even look at it, they just grabbed a glass of wine each and continued their conversation as if they were alone.
"He'll come," they said at the same time, looking briefly at Sanji and Zoro before resuming his argument.
Franky was next, grabbing his cola and downing the first bottle before his Speedo-clad arse had even touched the bench. "He'll come."
Brook and Chopper arrived within a minute of each other, both of them looking at the rest of the crew briefly before sitting down. "He'll come," they said, also within a minute of each other.
The last one, as always, was Robin. She checked to see everyone was already sitting down in their places and took hers, grabbing a glass of wine and offering her own, "He'll come," in a calm and assured voice.
The silence descended on them like a blanket, muffling the sound made by the clinking of glassed and their slow breathing, every eye fixed on the door.
This was the worst part, the wait. Every single night they sat, and waited, until one by one the members of the Straw Hat crew had assembled again. Or almost, they weren't complete. Not yet.
Luffy's arrival was heralded by noise, and laughter, and the irresistible sound of things breaking around him, and Sanji could see the smiles spreading around the table, hear the voices beginning to rise.
"He's coming!"
Life returned to the waiting figures, filling the worn out shadows of his friends with something resembling happiness. Conversations started, hands grabbed whatever food was closest to them and turned to look--really look--at one another.
Luffy crashed thought the door, a wide grin on his face.
"Guys! I knew you'd be here!" He said, bouncing up to them and finally taking the last empty seat at the table.
And they were; all of them finally together. All the king's men and the King himself.
"Oi shitty cook!"
"Nami-swan!"
"Super!"
"I, the Great Captain Usopp--"
"And then Laboon--"
Everyone started talking at the same time, the noise loud enough to rattle the windows and drown every word spoken in the cacophony of their combined voiced.
"Where to now?" Luffy asked, mouth full of meat.
Sanji shrugged taking a drag of his cigarette. It didn't matter, not anymore.
They were together again and they could finally move on.
