This is wonderful. It's what I've been looking for and haven't been able to find: fic that shows the social complexities and personalities that drove the first war; the Death Eaters as people with families, friends, social roles, and mundane lives; how they fit into their culture, how outsiders like Snape fit in with them; the little ways in which things went terribly wrong, both collectively and individually. Beautifully done - solid, layered, much more than the sum of its parts. It does so much in such a short space.

Thank you so much! I was thinking that anyone who stopped to really look at them (like Bella does) would tell that the Malfoys definitely have their own priorities. so glad you enjoyed it!

This is brilliant - it’s fascinating to see First War pureblood society as a society and not just a group of fanatics whose lives consist of one thing only. All the viewpoints stood out for me, for different reasons: Rabastan’s unrequited feelings for Narcissa; Rookwood’s awareness of how his status as spy sets him apart; Severus’ rage at how the rich take their wealth for granted; Bellatrix’s disdain for Lucius (that arrogant prick - an epithet well-illustrated by the tone of his suggested solution to Augustus’ problem). I found Augustus’ viewpoint particularly interesting - he’s a character rarely portrayed in fic, and I liked his observation that ‘the benefit of being a spy is a lingering interest in the small things’ - and also the reminder that it was Severus’s friends Dumbledore was asking him to betray.
