Gun control would work just about as well as prohibition did

You know Gun control does not mean the end to the "Right to Bear Arms"

Under current law, large numbers of firearms at guns shows are sold anonymously by non-licensed dealers, who make up more than one-quarter of the sellers at gun shows. Non-licensed dealers are not required to conduct criminal or mental health background checks of purchasers at gun shows and there are no restrictions on the number or types for firearms that collectors may sell at gun shows.

Performing a background check will ensure compliance with the Gun Control Act of 1968 that prohibits individuals who have been involuntarily committed to a mental institution from purchasing firearms.

My belief is that we must have laws to that provide for strict enforcement of gun sales in the US. A waiting period that allows for intense back round checks of criminal record, but also mental health as stated above.
Hopefully this is a makeup call to the NRA home state of Virginia
