I have heard it said that the definition of class is listening to the William Tell Overture and not thinking of the Lone Ranger. Of course, I always think of a Clockwork Orange, so maybe that's not entirely accurate. And it's probably a bit dated now ( Read more... )

In Greece, the work day starts wicked early. So the trains, to help people get up and at them, play inspirational music. Which is usually, I shit you not, soundtracks from movies. I heard the "Star Trek" theme more times than I'd care to count, all as punishment for the sin of getting up early.

I know what you mean. Singing classical and opera is a lot like that, in that the conventions are extremely rigid. You not only have to sing a certain way (which is, honestly, largely connected to vocal health), but you have to dress a certain way and even wear certain make-up. I wish sometimes that they would do operas in which women weren't strapped into extremely tight corsets and then expected to sing into the stratosphere. Thank goodness for pants roles. >.
