misia talked about cultural appropriation and how it's a reflection of a certain cultural mindset. As a comment, she linked Pachelbel's Canon in D Major remixed. There's also a rock versionAnd I was thinking about other modern interpretations of classic music I've heard, like Madness' version of "Swan Lake" and Electric Hellfire Club's version of " ( Read more... )

...sacred texts are not meant to be read literally (no matter what the Protestants tell you), but are meant to be illustrative and help you to understand the Divine

Oh right on.

Just, wow. I couldn't watch the Transbuddah version because i refuse to download any wma/wmv plug ins. But the Jerry C version is amazing! The Canon is one of my favourite pieces of music and I was touched by the obvious emotion he played with. Thanks for that link!

I also like Trance Opera's version of Ave Maria, and the Habenera.

As for the book God's Breath, I haven't heard of that before. I may have to look it up, since I've read most of the books you mentioned above. Before I moved back here from England, I had the Rumi, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Qu'ran, as well as the Tibetan Book of the Dead. I love to read them, and see what they have in common, and how, being an atheist and not really taking the "God" aspect to heart, I can incorporate those teachings into my life; as a "tenets of a good life" sort of thing, as opposed to "getting into heaven" philosophy.

The transbudda version is a Korean rap style remix with scratching and a human beat box, played on traditional Korean instruments (er, part of it) and some simply amazing break dancers.

Find a PC you can view it on, I think it's worth it.

And I'm glad you liked the Jerry C version. Reminded me of Hendrix doing the Star Spangled Banner for some reason. Probably the emotion he put into it.

hm. have the pc at work and permission from IS to put anything on it I want (handy, being IS/Network support, once upon a time lol). Must look at it on Monday. I am very much intrigued.

Is there anywhere I could get just the audio of that Jerry C version, that you know of?

A shortish loop of it is playing as the background on his website.

He's mentioned in the wikipedia entry, but I don't see anywhere a link to just an audio version.

Here's a thread that might have a version around still. Not sure about persistance of those links.

Somewhere I have Fur Elise played on steel guitar.

And, of course, Dolly Parton singing Stairway to Heaven, a different kind of revisionist classic.
