That is unbelievably sad. You know, I'm really glad I got the chance to live in Arizona for three years--and especially that Josh got to live in Yuma, right near the border--because in the East, there isn't as much understanding about what's going on down there. The further you get from the border (unless you're in those states who just hate everybody who's not white and Christian), the more abstract the immigration issue becomes, and people are not as aware of how heated and hateful the issue often is in border states. Seeing the lettuce farms in Yuma and the buses transporting day laborers to go stand under that unbelievably hot sun for twelve hours for pennies makes you realize that this issue really is about people--people who clearly have it so bad where they are that they are desperate enough to go through this. This isn't some abstract concept we're debating, it's human lives. It amazes me how people have just forgotten how this country started--Christ, even the puritans came here to escape religious persecution, and since ( ... )
