1 week later ~

Buffy sat in the small holding cell the court provided during deliberation and concentrated on breathing.

In…

Out…

In…

Out…

Staring at the wood paneled walls outside the cell she tried to keep her heart rate slow and make herself believe that she wouldn’t win, she couldn’t win. It would kill her if she didn’t so she hadn’t let herself believe that there was even a chance. She would go back to jail and the baby would be placed in some foster home and that would be that. She would never see Spike or Dawn again, and she would never look on the face of her child. The child she already loved with ferocity she had never known before. As she forced herself to repeat this the tears slipped down her face unnoticed.

In…

Out…

In…

Out…

“Buffy?” Wes’ soft voice cut through her mantra.

“I’ve got something here from Will.” He said gently nodding to the guard as he moved to open the door for him.

As Buffy looked up Wesley was struck by how empty her eyes were and the tear stained cheeks, *this was the girl he convicted of kidnapping? * He thought able to admit to himself now that he was a right bloody fool for not listening to her in the first place and letting her be put in jail at all.

Taking a seat beside her on the hard bench he took her hand and patted it a bit awkwardly.

“We’re going to win this Buffy. Don’t worry stiff upper lip and all that.” When she turned her desolate green eyes to him he realized even to his ears the platitudes sounded like something off a cheesy hallmark card.

Mentally giving himself a kick in the arse he reached into his jacket pocket and extracted a white envelope with her name written on the front.

“This is from Will….uh…Spike. He wants you to read it before the verdict.” He said handing it to her and standing up. “I expect we’ll hear from the jury soon, don’t give up hope Miss Summers.” Not getting a response he nodded, “ I’ll just leave you alone now.” Watching her move the envelope restlessly between her hands he felt compelled to say, “Really Buffy, even if it comes back guilty….which I am positive it won’t…..I’ll keep fighting for you.”

She nodded looking up at him. “Thanks Wes, I know you will.”  She gave him a small half smile as he stepped from the cell and the bars clanged back into place.

Opening the envelope she reached in and pulled out a single sheet of white paper. Setting the envelope beside her on the bench she opened the paper with shaking hands her heart in her mouth.

She blinked…..look around for a hidden camera….looked down again and blinked again.

Taped inside the folded sheaf of paper with scotch tape was a beautiful sparkling diamond ring.

Tears sprung to her eyes as she read the note written in a harsh back slanting script,

“I know that you’ve given up hope. I know that this isn’t the romantic setting that every little girl hopes for, but I love you more than setting, and flowers can ever hope to express. Not even bars can keep me from loving you.  Please say you’ll marry me?

~Your Spike

Buffy pulled the ring from the paper and slid it onto her left hand ring finger starting to giggle as she did so. The world, which had seemed so bleak just a few moments before suddenly brightened; and her heart, which she had so carefully cordoned off from pain, was suddenly open to a world of shining possibilities. All because of a perfect ring and a flawed man that loved her. Looking at the beautiful gem she smiled brilliantly, it was a perfect fit, but then again so was he. Who woulda thunk?

2 years later

Spike sat on the back porch watching Buffy as she put her 3 charges through various Ti Kwon Do exercises then relaxation and meditation techniques. A blond haired blue-eyed bundle of bubbling joy bounced lightly on his knee as he spoke softly to his daughter. “See mommy’s helping them so that they can grow up to be healthy productive girls just like my little flower pot.” He murmured kissing her golden curls and inhaling her sweet baby scent.

It was true, since Buffy’s release and expunging of her criminal record she and Spike both had decided that helping teenaged girls that had been abused either sexually or physically or both was their calling. Spike had become a teen counselor turning his working eye to helping them before they were in the prison system and Buffy was a physical and emotional therapist; concentrating on helping them to maintain their inner control and channel their feelings of confusion and pain into healthy outlets.

Spike thought back over the past two years and smiled. Not only did he and Buffy get married, but also they had their baby, their little Hope and they had also managed to get Wesley to review Darla’s case. Since she had been such a help to Buffy while incarcerated and a friend to Spike they fought for her to be let out and 6 months ago had stood by her when she was released from jail to her new life.

She and Buffy had cried and hugged for so long that Spike threatened to get a pry bar out to pull them apart. Since then Darla had become one of the family and was never far from them and had even started dating Wesley much to everyone’s surprise.

Hope gurgled at him and clapped her tiny pudgy hands together pulling him from his thoughts and making her mommy glance up with a sweet grin for her husband and her baby.

“That’s enough for now girls.” She said turning back to the three teenagers she and Spike had taken into their home for rehabilitation along with providing a solid place for Dawn.

Smiling at them with gentle ease she said, “Go… have some fun but be back for dinner ok?” The girls all nodded and grinned at her bouncing up with coltish vibrancy and giving her a hug before bounding up the stairs ruffling Spike and Hope’s hair as they went.

“Oi…watch the hair.” He groused good-naturedly smiling when his daughter squealed and laughed in his arms at the attention.

Buffy giggled that delightful giggle that never ceased to make his heart skip a beat as she plopped down beside him on the steps and entwined her arms through his and around their daughter.

“So pet….got any plans for tonight?” He asked resting his cheek on his wife’s warm honey colored locks.

“Mmmmmm…I was thinking of leaving Hope with Darla and then you and I going out on the town. Maybe some dinner, dancing, a nice hotel room with nothing but the two of us…..” She said running her finger down his strong forearm invitingly.

“Sounds like a plan to me pet.” He said his voice husky against her ear, “Gonna make another little bit tonight are we?” He asked her his eyes twinkling at the thought of expanding their family.

“No….just want you for your tight little body…” She teased her smile radiant as he pouted, “besides, the doctor told me yesterday we’re going to be having one soon enough as it is.”

“You….You….mean?” He asked her turning to look at her joy and yearning filling the deep blue pools of his eyes.

Nodding giddily Buffy squealed along with Hope as he drug her into a tight embrace whooping loud enough for the whole of Sunnydale to hear.

“I’m gonna be a da again?” he asked joyfully seeing her nod again and thinking that he couldn’t get any luckier if he tried.

Pressing a kiss to her lips he was careful not to squash their little bundle as he murmured, “How did I get to be so lucky?”

“Well, all it took was for me to go to jail and you to be a mess.” She shrugged giving him a saucy grin as she stood up. “I’m going to start getting ready for tonight lover boy, Darla said she’d be here around 6 pm or so.”

Pressing a last kiss to the top of his head and ghosting her fingertips over her daughters cheek Buffy went inside leaving father and daughter to their quiet moment on the porch.

As the warm summer breeze drifted around them and the tree moved shedding dappled sunlight onto the shady ground, Spike wrapped his arms around his tiny treasure smiling to the world.

Yes he had been a mess, and yes she had been incarcerated wrongly, but he wouldn’t trade what he had now for all the tea in the bloody realm. Life was good. He had a wife he adored, a pseudo sister in bit, friends, family, Hope and if he got his wish another little girl they could name Joy. Yep, life was good and if you had told him that two and a half years ago he would have laughed. But the way of the world is not determined by men and now he had all he wanted…..who woulda thunk?

THE END!!!!

*I hope I did it justice, it was so much fun to write. I wanted to have the sappy fairytale ending without so much fairytale. :D Let me know what you think. And I can’t wait for the next one!!!*
