My dad took me to the dump a few times. I found my favorite Christmas tree ornament there.
In college and later when I just lived in college towns, "dumpster diving" was popular among my friends. It's best at a private school where the kids' rich daddies pay for their dorm room, all their furniture, and basically everything. Because those kids throw away some amazing shit. Once at Baylor, we got a stack of brand-new Levis, a pair of once-worn Nikes, several serviceable items of furniture, bottles of unopened shampoo and peanut butter, a pretty, cloth-lined laundry basket, and who knows what other crap. And we didn't get there until after the carpet guys - the ones collecting the usable carpet people had thrown away. They always figured out what room it fit in, cleaned it, and sold it to the person who had the room next year.
