Two Years Ago Today

Sep 11, 2003 14:05

I thought that I would always remember the events of September 11, 2001, but I'm already blurring it. Maybe that's the way it's supposed to be.

I don't know how you dealt with it either. I got all choked up just reading what one of hte kids at the service today said. I keep thinking that Sept. 11 will be like the attack on Pearl Harbor. Nowdays, the only ones that remember December 7th are the old veteran's (well and history geeks like myself and I wonder if that's only because my grandpa was there).

I often think of this in relation to Pearl Harbor also. I'm a huge history buff too - (Hey, didn't we have a conversation how much we are alike?!) America came alive after that attack. A sleeping giant. The Japanese didn't even know exactly how badly they decimated our sea and air fleet. We were almost taken out of the war before we got in.

The Sept. 11 attack didn't surprise me that it happened. I think much of the Westernized world thinks that the world has gotten nicer, more civilized and that people can be reasoned with, but I grew up as a Mormon, where we are taught that we should always have a year's supply of food in our basement, 3 months worth of water, at least a half tank of gas in the car, and the knowledge of how to start a fire in the wilderness. The concept that evil is in the world and we are always just a half step away from it has been drummed iinto my head.

I raised LDS as well, and we really have been raised the same. We grew up with "wars and rumors of wars" so while it was shocking it was expected. Speaking of that, as an adult I never had a food storage but now I'm a BELIEVER! Heck, especially after the black-outs. I remember talking to my grandpa about Pear Harbor (he was in southern Utah at the time it happened) and they were convinced it was the Last Days. I had the same thoughts about September 11, but in retrospect I think there's a lot more evil out there that still has to be done yet, so it's sort of comforting in a weird sort of way.

I guess two years ago means before I knew you. I never realized that you were involved in the situation in any way. *Hugs* to you for your ability to keep going and do what needed to be done - though maybe in some respects keeping busy may have been better than sitting and staring blankly at the news coverage all day...

Kelly - I really do think we were all involved on that day.

I wasn't able to sit down and watch TV until Saturday, but staring blankly at a TV screen actually did help a little bit.

I do wish I'd met my TWoP/Aicob friends sooner. I can't believe the amount of support that a group of internet posters can offer to one another.
