I went skiing in northern Hyogo prefecture. Everyone said there would be no snow, but they were wrong. On the first day, the top of the mountain was covered in clouds and the air was white. On the second day, everything was clear and shining. I stopped on the last slope I skied before the trip home and looked around me, at the mountains, the thousands of people below. This is the world. This is a small island floating in an unimaginable vastness.

I have been reading a book called "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson. Learning about the history of the earth and the hugeness of the universe has made me feel very small.

These will be my last six months in Japan. I suppose I should make them count.
