Randomness. =)
If you google Dumbledore's gay, you get many webpages trying to prove that he is, if he's not, etc.

And I'm sat here wondering why people paid money to have their own domain and website to say "Dumbledore is gay" dun dun dun.

So I guess I just wanted to have my own say. =)
I'm guessin that you guys aren't coming down or anything this coming up weekend right? I know you and Steve both have family to tend to, as do we.....yay us. I didn't know about Beth or Daniel or anything either. It kinda would be cool like last year to have a big group dinner, but I really doubt anything will happen of that nature this year.

Love ♥

Didn't this happen like a month ago?

Tough thing about being a writer, you can't put everything down you want to sometimes and even then nobody is gonna agree with all the choices you make for a character.

That's very true.

Who owns the character? bromius76 November 20 2007, 15:46:27 UTC
She does. She can do whatever she wants with him, whenever she wants. Authors all the time are revealing more information about their characters. These facts are often not mentioned, or barely hinted at in the books themselves. The authors do this at conventions, interviews, book signings, etc. Hell, she may release a Potter Encyclopedia that goes into this in more details.

She owns the character, not the fans. Dumbledore is a character of her imagination. She is the one who gave him life. She can do with him as she wishes. As far as I'm concerned, her word is canon.

Here's a thought though, to those who have read the books more throughly than I: Can you find "a line, a passage, ANYTHING that suggests" that Dumbledore was heterosexual? From my memory, there's no more of those than their counterparts.

Well, to be perfectly honest, I believe there are lines that "suggest" each way. But there is nothing that "states" one way or the other.

The thing about being the author is that when you write a book and publish it, those characters become a part of every reader and belong to them as well, not just her.
It was pointless to do it now, once the series is done. Why say something about the character that does nothing for the story or Dumbledore?

And you're just proving my point further that there's no evidence to suggest it.

Dumbledore was above being just heterosexual or gay, and she tags him as gay probably because media pressured her, her publicist, who the hell knows. Dumbledore was fucking awesome, and then she wants to come out and say "by the way,Dumbledore's gay". WTF. What does that do for him? Give the gay community a sense of pride?

I completely disagree. I can be a fan of the characters and the books, but I in no way have any "right" to them. I can disagree with something an author may do, but they have the right to do that ( ... )

The way I see it... _iam_batman November 20 2007, 17:16:02 UTC
The whole Gay community will soon be in a up roar over this because the only gay person in HP died. And if this was true then why not let Ian Mckellan play him? Either way it's a lame fact coming out late when the story is over. It will not change the way I view him, but why bother, it effects nothing of the story, and as I see it, it's pointless. Does that have any effect on anything. I think she was trying to make a quota. Suddenly Malfoy will be a african american and Harry Potter will be latino. Jeez how lame is this...

And before Bryan comes through and says "what does it matter if she makes them black gay or asian" it's her right. And I say yes it is, But why does it matter? Story is over. So why bother unless you saving your butt or making more money. which she either took flak for there not being a homosexual in the story or she wants more fans. Plus who cares is an old even has sex. It matters not. He is probably more of a non-sexual meaning getting none.

I'd say she's more likely to lose fans than gain them over this. Granted, she already lost a lot of the extreme conservative christian right for having "magic." However, I'm willing to bet that she'll lost some of the demographic a little closer to center. I highly doubt however she will lose anyone who considers themselves a centrist or leftist.

I have yet to see a blog post about "the only gay person in HP died." But I have seen several posts of this variety ( ... )

Everything ok? bromius76 November 21 2007, 01:46:01 UTC
Hey guys,
Just wanted to make sure we're all okay here. For me this is definitely one of those "It's okay to disagree" things, but, well, you know Phillip and I.... we love to debate things.
I just figured I'd drop this in here just in case things every took a turn for the nasty. :)

Love you guys!
Bryan

Yeah both me and Mel are fine. But you proved my point anyway, if being homosexual adds nothing to the character and the author herself gains nothing then why bother... What does it matter. It doesn't it's pointless. Like I said earlier Dumbledore as a character probably has not had sex in decades. (which I am sure is not supported or supported by the books) And why not make Dumbledore played by Michael Jackson and add a "special relationship" to Dumbledore and Harry. Especially all those "late night study sessions" in Dumbledores orifice oops I mean office . No the whole thing is exactly that pointless. So who cares if he is gay or not gay. One thing is for certain though if just the 2 of you are this upset, then again why do it. Who gains anything? and that is the real question. No one. No one as old as Dumbledore as thought about sex, the story is not about sex, so the whole sexual orintation thing should have never been brought up. It is P O I N T L E S S!! end of story.

Oh by the way "if you 2 are this upset".... imagine all the other people who are upset by it, and why risk that much. It didn't add or take anything from the character so again why bother.

Yikes.... If I have come across as upset in _any_ of the above, then let me apologize right now. I have honestly not been at any point. I thought I had been passive enough with my tone in my posts to make that apparent. But I guess not, so I'll try to be more careful. :-) (There is no sarcasm in any of what I just typed ( ... )
