Consumer Reports released a report on overuse of costly medical treatments in maternity care. I really think this is a crappy direction for us to take as a country. It's not helping with infant mortality rates and it's not beneficial for either the mother or the infant ( Read more... )

The U.S. health care system needs some major changes. Even though I've had full time jobs for about the past 5 years, I've only had health insurance for about 2 of those years. It just doesn't make sense.

When I did have health coverage, it never covered what I needed and most of the time I felt like the Doctors didn't listen to me or care about my health at all. I'm going on 10 years of constant back and neck pain (shoulders now too, yay) and the only person who I felt ever actually listened to me and believed I have a problem was an acupuncturist who told me that acupuncture probably wouldn't help me much.

Stand firm. Get a second (or third) opinion. Only you know how you feel, and in my opinion that probably goes a long way in treating health issues.

Wow they really milk those pregnant mothers for all they're worth, don't they? I'm guessing you could avoid going to the doctor at all until the baby is born and it will be fine, but then they wouldn't get to shoot you up full of their expensive chemicals!

Seriously, RE: the above comments! I think you should listen to your instincts. Can Jeremy help you get your point across?

I'm pretty sure this kind of thing will keep happening though because it can be pretty daunting when they start pulling the dead baby card. It's amazing how many doctors feel perfectly fine bringing that up around pregnant women, because they know it freaks us the fuck out. In my particular case though they're starting to come around a bit. They realize I'm not one of those completely uninformed people rambling on about how a vaccine gave my kid autism. I do actually like the science and they're starting to like explaining it all to me. I think they're just more accustomed to people being confused by more of it.
