On any other day, Hermione Granger would’ve thought that even thinking that a Malfoy could be genuinely generous was absurd.
But today wasn’t just any other day. No, today was the first snow of the season - and Hermione Granger was going to make a snowman.
Harry and Ron thought that this sudden obsession of their best friend's was rather silly. They were spending their time doing better things, like raving about how much of a greasy git the Potions Master really was. Or playing Quidditch. You know, important things.
So, Hermione bundled up and went outside to start her project herself.
It didn’t take her long, as she had gone out with a plan -but she looked at the stack of snowballs in front of her and realized it was missing something. She’d forgotten the eyes, the nose, and the smile. (Of course he’d smile! This was Hogwarts, and after V-... after You-Know-Who was killed - times were better. It was okay to be happy.)
She turned around to start the walk inside to find something suitable for her snowman’s face, when she saw him.
Out of the doors walked Draco Malfoy, with his hands in his pockets.
“Granger.”
“Malfoy.”
He made quick work of the distance between them before coming to a standstill about a foot in front of her. “What’s this?”
“This is a snowman.”
“He’s…”
“I was just on my way back inside to find something for his face,” she quickly answered, before he could comment. She looked over her shoulder, evaluating her work. When she turned back around, Draco’s hands were out of his pockets and held out toward her. Resting in his palms were a carrot, two big black buttons, and several small red ones - the things she had decided would complete this project.
She smiled, and took the items one by one until her snowman was complete.
“Happy Christmas, Hermione.”
When she turned back around to thank him, he was gone. “Happy Christmas, Draco,” she whispered.
