I'm really digging my Chopin at the moment. His work is so relaxing and encouraging when you're revising ( Read more... )

being eclectic with regards to musical tastes is the way forwards!

erm.. i like lots of things.. its hard to show how diverse my tastes are without showing you my music collection but even that doesnt encompass everything i like..

basically you can probably pick any musical genre and i'll find something i like in it, with the few exceptions of country music (having said that, i like some dolly parton stuff..) i tend not to like current british pop music (but like americans) and i'm not a big fan of folk music..

having said that most of the stuff i listen to on a regular basis comes in a scale of indie ---> metal or somehow fits under the dance music spectrum.. but that in itself covers a lot of ground..

It's definitely true that people with eclectic tastes tend to be more intellectually interesting (although that doesn't really include me cos all I talk about it magic these days).

The reason I wrote it really is that I tend to get the impression that there's too many people who just listen to the same genre, and subsequently develop quite restrictive opinions on other peoples tastes. It all gets a bit irritating how people tend to knock your more obscure choices of music when all they listen to is songs which end up being barely distinguishable.

Sorry for being ranty! Have you got any recommendations to share?

Oh, and to maybe get you to rethink your stance on Country, check out The Devil Went Down To Georgia by The Charlie Daniels Band - it's a really really cool song :)

hmm.. half of my favourite songs atm are things prolly everyone has heard.. so they're not exactly recommendations i guess but anyway heres what i'm currently (over)playing:

air - sex born poison (mmmmm dark air yey)
adam freeland - we want your soul (ed rush remix)
beck - nobody's fault but my own
dakar and grinser - are you really satisfied now?
destiny's child - lose my breath (heh i really should be bored of this by now)
mind.in.a.box - walking
poe - control (hey pretty is also kinda cool.. but the one with the guy talking over the top not the original which i heard later so it sounds odd to me)
slipknot - duality
tomcraft - overdose

The Devil Went Down To Georgia was cool, ta :D

Doubt you have unique taste, just very wide and varied taste which is how it should be (unique would be hard, you could probably do it but only as an end in itself which would be incredibly pretentious ;) )

My playlists tend to follow a similar jumping style as my mood changes really quickly - usually a good mix of happy hardcore, blues, classic jazz, industrial, noise, classical, indie, hip-hop, etc.

How about recommending a few tracks you have that are really obscure but you wish everyone could hear? My top list at the moment would be: Binary Star - Honest Expression, Bessie Smith - Nobody Knows You When You're Down And Out, Blind John Davis - Summertime, Panda Bear - A Musician and a Filmmaker, Layo & Bushwacka - Love Story (D&B Bootleg).

Yeah I guess unique isn't the best way of describing a taste in music, but it's definitely unique when you compare it to my close friends' tastes.

Nice idea about the recommendations. Here goes mine:

Solomon Burke - Don't give up on me
The Shins - New Slang
Danger Mouse - Omega Supreme
Beta Band - Dry The Rain
Chopin - Mazurka in F Sharp, Minor Op 6, No. 1
Notorious BIG - Juicy

I'll try and track down some of yours tonight - if I can't find them I might pop onto #pde and say ello :)
