I have a rubber squeaky shark mascot on my handlebars

any kind of lights and functionality and safety at night (ask me for specific recommendations), but wrapping the frame in low-voltage battery-powered Christmas lights would be great!

Ahhh...that would be great! But what would happen if it started raining?

Your squeaky shark fits well with your LJ icon. :) I have 3 rubber duckies - maybe I could mount them along my handlebars.

I would love some safety tips. The girl who sold it to me gave me a blinkie light (orange) so I assume that goes on the back. Do I need a white blinkie for the front? Or an actual headlight? How about reflective tape - I'm guessing I should basically slap that all over exposed surfaces. Beyond that, I'm in the dark. (Oh, I admit my weakness for bad puns.)

I commute in the dark to work. What I do:

bright front light - absolutely critical. keeps cars from turning into your path

bright rear light - I have 2, red blinkie high and red steady, low

reflective ankle bands. I also wear one on my left wrist, for when I signal

big reflective triangle on my butt, a vest or sash would be ok too.

reflective stuff on helmet

NO CLOSE CALLS AT NIGHT EVER!

Go to a local bike store and look at Cateye and other products, and don't skimp if you're truly going to ride at night. Spending $50 on lights is cheaper than emergency room visit or death

Believe me, I am a safety junkie on this sort of thing. I won't drive through a parking lot in a car without putting on my seatbelt! One of the reasons I've put off getting a bike is because it seems so dangerous.
So thanks for that great list - I'll take it along when I go buy my helmet at the bike shop. I am all about spending a little now to save myself from misery later.

Ahahaha, I actually did think to myself, "But whenever I ride my bike, I won't be able to read...it'll be so much more boring." :P

I love the idea of black & red pirate stripes. Hot-cha! I wish I had a little license plate flap for a bumper sticker. Ohhhhh...I just had an idea for the dorkiest/coolest thing ever. One of those little triangle flags that sticks up on a bouncy pole, only instead of it being bright orange, it could be black with a skull & crossbones!

And what's that big space between the two bars for, anyway? (I don't know the names for them, but the two bars that extend from the front to the back.) Couldn't I make a solid piece that fit into there and had a cool design on it?
