THANK YOU. GOD, I hate the media and how nusto it's going over this. It's harsh to say it, but the main reason people in Mexico died from this flu is because their medical system is even worse than ours is. This flu arrived in the wake of Mexico almost being declared in a state of emergency because of their political system, so why are we unduly surprised that people died there when something like this occurred? I feel sorry for the Mexicans who have died because it's their government's fault. Mike was reading an article on the medical team's response to patient 0: half of them treated it like the serious situation it was, and the other half said "God's mad at us and this is his punishment. There's nothing we can do, we're all going to die." Seriously, if your DOCTORS think like that, you've got a problem in your country.

For most healthy Americans, we'll probably be fine, but yeah, the media's main purpose is entertainment, so they'll post as many "is this the new black death!?!?!" headlines as they can. :P

Not to say that this isn't a problem, because, yes, this new strain has the *potential* to develop into a pandemic. Very unlikely, in my opinion, but still possible.

The biggest problem, and I complain about this all the time, is that people aren't well-informed! In other parts of the world, it's usually the government's fault for filtering information. Sometimes it's the media's fault for distorting/exaggerating information. Here, it's mostly because people don't give a crap about giving themselves "the power of knowledge" and then freak out because they don't know any better. I think it's also a sad reflection on the education system of our country (and I *know* you agree with me on this one... lol).

But you're right. I think with this case, the media is making it a LOT worse than it actually is. Like I said, they're covering it thoroughly... maybe a bit too thoroughly. :P

I definitely agree about people being uninformed. People just listen to headlines and then don't listen to the whole story, let alone research something on their own to get the facts.

I'm sure it's making your job interesting though, right? I heard about this new chip they've developed that when you breath on it it can detect whether or not you have swine flu - they presented the technology at TED this past year. Have you heard anything about it? :)

I haven't heard about the chip; sounds interesting! I should look into it. Do you have any more info on that?

Tamiflu is great if you *have* the flu, but make sure you're taking it for the right thing!

It is, I was assigned it for Prophylaxis. As you might be aware, IL has the highest swine flu lab confirmed cases.
