Thought about posting this to the foreign musicals LJ group, but it's too embarrassing, so i'll keep it here for the moment. XD
I picked up a pencil and paper for the first time in a long while last night and in about 40 minutes i drew the picture of Herbert. It's a fun style to draw, sort of angular and he came out looking quite nice. I went to ( Read more... )

Can I just say how much I love these? Particularly since I am such a... mmm... uncreative artist. Seriously, I am utterly and terribly mathematical. References = must. You remind me of a friend of mine, who can sit down and in five minutes turn out sketch after sketch full of life. I just can't DO that. /envy!

And Herbert! The character just oozes off of him. How do you do that? =D

I think it's just the trade-off for realism... or, you know, any real skill in creating likenesses, or drawing people or real things. I can't do any of this. I can't do any of the beautiful and amazing things you can do with a pencil, or with pastels. I don't understand light and shadow, or atmosphere. Or how peoples' faces are really made up.
It's just charicaturing XD
My brother is a cartoon animator who's just finishing University. Anything i know about drawing comes from him.

I would never say you were an uncreative artist! The things you do with those pictures, particularly the black and red ones. It's so dramatic and moving. No way. It's amazing.

Aw, you called my drawings beautiful and amazing. <3? ;) I mean, eh, I'm not an idea person when it comes to drawing. I can synthesize different ideas, and make people look real. All my sketches start the same way [contour map!] and then I pick one medium or another to use.

But... originating poses, getting people to look right? The way Sarah's shawl drapes off her shoulders, the little kink in Herbert's shoulders, even the ease of expression. That's pure creation right there. I love it. It just snags my eye. Something I have no ability to do so I really appreciate it. =)

I can't stop looking at people's faces as art objects now >,,< it's kind of silly. Planes, angles, light, shadow. (But it makes people watching fun! It can also lead to creepy sounding conversations.)
