Soo...as my first semester as a grad student comes to a close, I have some internal conflict in which I would appreciate comments and advice, even if we barely talk anymore

I think that if you aren't happy now, doing more of the same thing is not going to make you any happier. Comparing your current situation to Joel's since you have similar work schedules and financial aid, he is very happy with his program. He loves the work he is doing, gets along well with the people in his program and he likes most of the Professors. I don't think you're just taking longer to adjust, it really seems like perhaps you aren't in the right place or doing what you want to be doing.
If there is something you are excited about doing then I think you should go for it. Even if that means waiting for a little while and taking out loans. You're looking for something to do for the rest of your life. You should certainly be doing something you enjoy! :)
I think that you should follow your heart. If you feel like you're having a rough time studying the subject you spent four years on, it's okay. You might just need a break. I know that I needed a break from studying music because I had nearly ripped my soul out finishing my stuff at Wells. I just couldn't go on to grad school and deal with four more years. I needed to learn other things, and find new passions...because it's never good to just have one

I haven't read the other comments yet, so apologies if I repeat something. But first of all, as far as I'm concerned, you applied to UVM because you've been an admirer afar for a looooooong time. You love Vermont. Wells has to be the only place outside of the state you'd fit in

dearest sarah bryce, i'm glad to see somebody else less-than-interested in their grad program. and honestly, i'd say screw it and move on to something that makes you happier. follow your sooooul, woman! i'm giving albany a deadline, and if it don't perform i be bailing oot! i hope this was somewhat coherent/helpful/awesome. yay! keep yo' chin up, fille. loooove, dommy i mean mastrolia
hey lady. just want to say that you are not alone. my program is HUGE (like 240 students), and mostly everyone works, so there is not a lot of comrodarie (sp?). it gets really lonely, even with having erica. it is hard to adjust to not being surrounded by your favorite people, so i am completely with you on that one. do i have any advice about it? no. if i did, i would take it myself! but, i do feel you're pain
