I do some SFG. I even made a cheat sheet of the various spacings out of a side of milk carton and a sharpie pen. That way I can take it outside and read it without my reading glasses.
But I'm not that rigorous. I have a rotation plan for the beds for a general idea of what goes where but after that plants get shoved in by what bed is ready.
I just started a bunch of carrots and a few other things in newspaper pots. I put 3 carrot seeds in each. I'll plant the whole pot without disturbing the carrots. I'll space these 1 - 2 inches apart. So it's not quite official SFG but the effect will be the same.
Corn I also plant on a grid. My 20 - 25 plants. I also planted pumpkin with the corn but it never did much.

How much space have you set aside for gardening?
What kind of soil do you use in your newspaper pots? I have a sweet pepper, eggplant and roma tomato seed started in newspaper pots with potting soil and I've been fighting with fungus. I cut back on the watering and have it mostly under control. But I think for the next round, I'll mix in some peat moss with the potting soil to see if it helps.
