I would skip the black plastic stuff. It rots eventually, and then it tears and the whole area will look ragged. My mom used it in her yard and it didn't last two years. Mel mentions laying down hay in the paths in his book; that will keep weeds down and look nice.

Only the cheap, really thin black plastic rots and rips fast. I have some of this heavy duty landscaper stuff I got from my husband's friend who works at a golf course. We've had some at the side of the house for two years and it is still holding up.
The black plastic i'm putting over the beds isn't staying. I'll take it off in the spring before I plant anything.
