The Square Foot Garden is looking much the same as before, only now it is totally full of dirt. I'm planting stuff next week. Onions, Broccoli, Lettuce, Strawberries, Carrots, and maybe some hardy herbs. I also need to dig up all those Iris bulbs you see sprouting in the background there behind the yellow Daffodils, divide them, and replant them ( Read more... )

I love it. Did you use "Mel's Mix"?

Sort of not. I used the Lasagna Garden layering system.
If I remember correctly each box has 1 sack of peat, 1 sack of mushroom compost, 1 sack of cow poo, a trashbag full of chopped up leaves and grass, a little spoiled hay, and 1 big sack of Miracle Grow Garden Soil. All this is on top of hardware cloth to keep out the gophers and moles, and wet newspapers to keep out the grass.

You'll have to post pic's when everything is growing. I'm trying the original square foot gardening this year (as all of my other garden attempts have been pitiful). We're doing it on a deck. And I didn't DARE stray from the mix, coward that I am.

I'll try to make some pics and put them on here. :)

Yeah, I read the first Square Foot Garden book about the same time I read the Lasagna Gardening for Small Spaces book and the Ruth Stout books so I just combined everything and I'm hoping it will work out. Before this all I ever grew were tomatoes and peppers in big pots by my front door at my old place. I always wanted a garden, but I'm not so much into the tilling and weeding and all that crap that goes with it. Here in zone 7 I can't really plant much of the good stuff for another three weeks lest I risk it freezing, but I'm putting in some seeds and onions and taters etc. this weekend. I'll post more pictures as it happens.
