It saddens me to admit this, but I've came close to giving up on my cousin. He's a good kid; Has a heart in the right place and a good head - even though his head is in the clouds sometimes ( Read more... )

How does one find a missing person abroad? Any ideas?

I'm assuming you don't have tens of thousands of dollars to pay for a crack team of international detectives.

Put his picture on Flickr. Publish a 'have you seen this man' blog post and hope it gets picked up by the internets.

No, I"m not being flip, I'm serious.

That's not half a bad idea. However, in the meanwhile I wrote to the consulate and am waiting for some more information (contacts and such). If that line of investigation fails I'll probably do that, also.

Off topic - guys that cut and ran before they got to boot camp were usually given an administrative discharge i.e. the paperwork was torn up and no more was said about the matter.

Or at least this used to be the case. IANAL but I can't see any reason why the Army would do anything formally against a guy who, while technically a deserter, simply chose not to go to boot camp.

I appreciate the thought, but keep in mind that I'm talking about Israel - A country which has mandatory enlistment as a core rule. It's not about not goint to boot camp; A person skipping out on enlistment without clearing out the details of discharge (which he was in the middle of doing) might face a few years in jail, easy; A good scenario will be a few weeks of military prison (which is much nicer in Israel than ordinary prison - I'm serious, this isn't a sarcastic remark), and then discharge, but even that's pretty creepy to a teenager who knows nothing of either.

Oh!

a few weeks of military prison (which is much nicer in Israel than ordinary prison - I'm serious, this isn't a sarcastic remark

No, I get that. The brig aboard Camp Lejeune was nicer than a civilian jail: it's mostly like living in a barracks, except that you can't leave. Plus you're under sterner discipline in confinement. But it's not as bad as, say, boot camp.

However, that's for nice prisoners. Murders, rapists and so on .. they serve time in a not-so-nice Federal prison.
