If you thought such diversity was limited to the bestiary, a cursory look at the students and staff would soon prove otherwise; humans, Vulcans and half-demons walk the halls together with room for more. In this place, impossible is only defined by the limits of the imagination.
Perhaps the biggest differences come with the world itself, however. History has not been kind to magical folk. While a tenuous peace exists now, it hasn't always been so; dark witches and wizards rise, fall and rise again throughout the years as the government that is meant to be a guiding light concentrates on protecting its own power rather than its people. More than anything else, this tentative stalemate is like the calm before the storm.
It's not all bad, though. Hogwarts may not be a safe haven from the realities of this world, but it won't thrust you into the depths of it either. It’s the sort of place where, if you can’t make a home, you can at least feel comfortable trying. Sure, the library explodes every now and then, but what library couldn’t use a bit of excitement?
It's not perfect, but it's something. And in a time where nothing is certain, at least staff and students alike can rely on most of the school still standing at the end of the day. We hope. The ghosts don’t really mind either way.
Recent history in the world of
squarewarts has been especially grueling for its magical inhabitants. Dark witches and wizards have risen, and fallen, but with each new darkness, the wizarding world has lost a little more of its hope.
The most dangerous dark witch in over one-hundred years, a woman known and feared only as
Ultimecia, came to power approximately ten years ago. Ultimecia, a seemingly immortal woman, ageless and self-obsessed, rose with the goal of eradicating those that threatened her power, claiming all the wold's magic as her own, and manipulating time to fashion herself as a god.
In the process of seeing her terrifying vision realized, Ultimecia learned of a charity worker called
Edea Kramer, and her husband,
Cid Kramer, then Head of the Auror Office. Both were well-liked and supported by the public, and it was around them that some of Ultimecia's greatest and most sinister plans would revolve.
Taking control of Edea's body via the Imperius Curse, Ultimecia ran for Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement - the position directly under the Minister for Magic, whose occupant would succeed in case of the Minister's untimely death. Because of Edea's popularity and talent, Ultimecia was able to win the position easily, and from there, carefully placed those loyal to her in other highly-ranked positions. When her power was secure, Ultimecia used Edea to assassinate then Minister, Huntsworth Morphington, a moderate halfway through his fourth term. Keeping control of Edea's body, in part to hold her hostage against the powerful Cid, who had amassed a loyal group of Aurors to follow him to his new position as Headmaster of Hogwarts, Ultimecia stepped forward to claim her prize - rule of wizarding Britain.
With such strength at her disposal, Ultimecia could have taken her next step in any direction. However, it was ultimately Headmaster Kramer, and his position as guardian of the witches and wizards of tomorrow, that drew Ultimecia to Hogwarts. If she could destroy the school and the powers Cid had gathered there, she would have dealt a blow to the magical community from which it might never recover.
Rather than gain the power she dreamed of, however, Ultimecia found herself thwarted in a fierce battle with Cid Kramer, that raged over Hogwarts grounds. He did not claim her life, but she was rendered powerless, thus releasing Edea from her control, and was sentenced to Azkaban and the Dementor's Kiss.
The
interim Ministry operated for approximately a year until the country was considered organised enough that they could no longer hold off the elections, with Ashford Sputterly heading the Ministry. After the turmoil of previous years, the Conservative party made a compelling argument in favour of stability and returning to ways and means that had always worked in the past. Seeking the comfort of the familiar over the dangers of the unknown, the Wizarding nation elected Perseus Filibuster, a prominent Conservative, to the position of Minister for Magic which he then held for eight years until an old presence in the realm of politics decided it was time to take an aggressive stance. One year ago, the Progressive
Augusta Merriweather was elected to lead Wizarding Britain, and has slowly been reorganising the Ministry to create a stronger Britain, ready to embrace the future.
