I worked on xmas. No biggie.
We went over to Matt's parents' house to discover that both parents were sick. Lovely. We didn't see them much that evening, so it kinda didn't feel right for a "family celebration" type of thing.
In an effort to not infect the rest of us, instead of Matt's mom, Kathy, helping like she usually does, Grandma did all the cooking. Cool. The food tasted great. Best sweet potatoes she has ever made.
Shortly before we left, Grandma got sick. I'm thinking, "Uh oh. Not good. She's the one who cooked/touched ALL the food, and old people taste everything and don't wash their hands before touching the food again." I honestly didn't want to hug her while saying goodbye b/c I was kinda scared of getting sick, but Matt told me that I wouldn't get sick from hugging her. Yeah, good point, the hug is probably safe, it's the food we just ate that'll be the cause.
The next morning, around 4.30-5, Matt begins vomiting and having diarrhea. Gee, great. He gets a bit of a fever. We take him to the doctor. Doc says it's a stomach virus, highly contagious, and looks at me and tells me that I'll be getting it too. He later goes on to say that it has an 80% attack rate, and that since 4 have gotten sick, then maybe I'm number 5, so I won't get it. I'm hopeful, and I'm thinking that since I haven't shown any signs, then maybe I'm in the clear. I'm cautious that evening, thinking any minute I might get sick. Nothing. Nada.
The next morning, at 3:15, I go to the restroom, and I've got diarrhea. Uh oh. That's how it starts. I know I've got the virus. 30 minutes later I'm vomiting. Later there's more vomiting. I was scared to drink b/c I couldn't hold anything down, but I knew I needed to drink to prevent dehydration. Drinking and vomiting really sucks, but I came to the conclusion that it was better than vomiting and then dry heaving. Blech.
Today, I've managed to hold down all liquids and gentle solid food. The Doc said to gradually build up and no dairy for 5 days. Joy.
Moral of the story: If you're shooting stuff out your mouth and ass, please postpone the freaking family gathering.
