That's a tough one. I consider my camera (EOS-10D) a 6 megapixel unit although Canon assured everyone it was really 6.3 ....
As a computer nerd I know mega == 1024 and so 3072x2048 is 3mega times 2mega and so I have a 6 megapixel camera. On the other hand each pixel only detects one of the three color channels, so does that make it a 2mp (2.1?) camera?
Bottom line is that people in general are not going to have the domain knowledge to make reasonable judgements. I wouldn't have lied, I think I would have said something about the glass being a lot more important than pixel count or something, but then I'm a crappy business person.
One thing for sure, I'd be shocked if this is the last time someone asks. You might want to defuse it or have a well thought out answer ready.
"He's just gonna rip that dress right off anyway" might get the father of the brides mind off the camera.
Yes, actually, one of the reasons why I wanted to get the D200 was so that people who knew something remotely about Nikon digital cameras would respect me more.
The Fxxx/Dxxx is a viable alternative to the flag ship Fx/Dx line due to it's smaller size. So in fact, event photographers continueally choose that line instead for the mobility.
On the other hand, the Fxx/Dxx line is considered quite low end by the average joe photographer, despite the fact that the only real detriment is that they have less speed burst and lack focus tracking.
How about "Has the best man been drinking, or does he always act like that?" or "I thought I heard the best man asking who had the ring - is that bad?".

In times like that, the snarky bitch part of me wants to always insert the term 'flux capacitator' just to see if they fall for it. ;)
