My best friend and her family live in Dry Creek, Louisiana, a bit north of Lake Charles area.  They were hit but not badly a week ago by Hurricane Gustav.  The area was practically demolished 3 years ago by Hurricane Rita.  People in their area are still struggling to rebuild their lives post-Rita ( Read more... )

Why aren't they evacuating??? Prayers and thoughts are currently being carried out.

There are a number of reasons why they aren't evacuating... There is no mandatory evacuation order for where they are. Even if there was, they wouldn't be able to leave because her husband Chris is the fire chief for the local volunteer fire department, and she is one of the volunteer firefighters. They are the evacuation point for much of the rest of the family, because they are farther inland and have a sturdy house (The house next to theirs got blown off the foundation during Rita, theirs suffered minor damage ( ... )

Newsprint works too, though it's kinda hard to read after it's used.

If the water rises high enough, their well may become polluted. But sounds like they are well prepared.

i had mentioned newspaper also, if they had any lying in a recycling pile.

It does sound like they're prepared for what is to come, though. Hopefully it will be an uneventful weekend for them...

My cousin and good friend lives just outside Houston with her 2 children - I think they came out of it ok - but haven't heard for sure. My thoughts are for all those affected!

I did hear from my friend this morning via text message. They made it through ok so far. Lost power and internet, but the house and people are fine. A coworker lost the roof on her house (can we say large kite?), and they're expecting power to be out for a while. Otherwise things are ok. :)
