It's a beautiful day here in the Pacific Northwest.  There's not going to be too many more of these from what we hear, so we're heading out to hit the trails.  Gonna do a nice couple-hour hike at Cougar Mountain, break in the new hiking boots & daypacks.

If the weather holds next week, we're gonna go do a couple of day hikes out by Mt. Ranier, ( Read more... )

Fink! Hurricane Kyle is about to hit us tonight. Not here personally in Dartmuth, because it's going up Fundy, and will possibly only a Tropical Storm when it gets there, but it's going to hit Yarmouth at just about high tide, and with that storm surge added in...
N.B. is slated for 100 mm. of rain, and there are flood watch warnings on the rivers,

And it was exactly five years ago that Hurricane Juan blew through in not quite record time and devastated Point Pleasant Park and the Public Gardens.
So enjoy your hike while you can! :)

Thanks, Toots. The rain just started a little while ago, and is now getting heavy, and it's been windy - and getting windier - all afternoon.
We should be all right here -I most sincerely hope - but I certainly wouldn't want to be in Saint John - even if I did have tickets to the Elton John concert tonight! :)

Considering the time here, I hope you had a wonderful hike. And I can't wait to hear your observations, comparing winter in the two places. :-)

You had your camera, right?????

sensei was just talking the other night about the best way to break in new hiking boots.. apparently rub them all over (inside and out) with vaseline and soak them in water and then wear them wet.. they apparently form to your feet?

it works! When I was in bootcamp (which was almost 15 years ago, OMG), the way we broke in our boots quickly was to scrub them really good with a rough brush and saddle soap, then throw them in the wash. leave them out overnight to loose some of the water, and then put them on the next morning when they're still pretty wet, and wear them all day. They definitely do form to your feet that way! :)

Yup. Did the same with my boots in Israel.
