Hey! I'm back from China. I couldn't update or view LJ or Blogger due to the mysterious Chinese government while I was in Beijing, so that explains the long LJ-silence. Anyway, I kept a hand-written journal and took a ton of photos, so expect me to start writing and putting up every day of my trip (and I mean it) on my blog once my laptop gets ( Read more... )

How was the air there? (Did it look like a James Fallows journal entry?) Could you breathe well enough?

Also, how was the hot Olympics protest action?

The air was incredibly hideous. I saw the blue sky exactly once after a violent all-night rain storm. Which went away very promptly. All the major tourist sights are covered in this nasty veil of gunk. I could barely talk for the first two days I was there (great fun croaking away at some hot guy in a club, lemme tell you), and I've still got a lingering case of Beijing Crud. So yeah, AIR BE CRAP. I saw one Westerner jogging through the square a few evenings ago. Perhaps he didn't know that's pretty much the fast track to devastating lung cancer.

I really only heard about the protests when I got back, due to the sneaky tendrils of the Chinese government. We had some vague, shaky details bouncing around from the hostel hippies that filtered in and out of Chez Hutong, but nothing definite. We tried to get over to the big Olympic year-to shindig that evening (we were only about two blocks off the square) but all billion people had turned out to see OMG JACKIE CHAN, so we couldn't get anywhere near it...had to watch it on television.

I took photos of almost everything I ate...I can't wait to bore the internet to tears with that stuff either! DEFINITELY go to China for the food. You will not be disappointed.

Welcome back to the consumer side of the ocean!

Your voodoo is indeed effective-unless your last flight is delayed four hours and you take off at the time you should have been landing. Then your voodoo becomes torture as the volume steadily climbs...

Looking forward to tales of high adventure.
