Recently I've been putting a lot of thought into what exactly it is that I want out of a house, and I've been trying to remember everything I can from my time as an architecture major about design.  Part of this has involved me watching a lot of those staging/home renovation/home buying shows on television, and being generally disgusted with people ( Read more... )

Unfortunately choosing the school bus in this analogy makes you just another one of the sheep.

Did I mention the disdain I have for these people and their terrible decisions? I thought I mentioned that.

Actually, most of the justifications you point out would qualify as needs, and would exempt people from my scorn.

I'm talking about people the empty nesters who, when faced with a choice between an architect designed home with solid wood built-ins and stone countertops (as examples), and a house that was literally designed by a contracter and which litterally requires you to walk through a bedroom and a closet to get from the kitchen to the living room, but which is twice the square feet of the other house, will choose the bigger house no matter what.

Don't misunderstand my position here, it's not that I think you should choose an unsuitable house just because it's beautiful, It's that I don't think you should choose an unsuitable house just because it's big.
