Wow that sucks! Never had a virus like that before where it hid my files/icons. But I had a bad virus (I think a rootkit, which goes really deep into your computer) and I couldn't even go into Windows normally at all. Even in Safe Mode, I was effed. So I had to call up Dell to do a full restore on the main C drive (most of my files are backed up on the external drive and secondary internal drive). Boy was that fun, NOT! Usually these days tho Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and ESET do a goo job of blocking things and finding/deleting things. But you can never be too careful.

I'm just about getting to the stage where I'll have to reformat my C drive as well. Still have a search redirect affecting google, and every second day something jumps into my start up menu and temp folders....so a reformat looks likely. Like you, I've got all my important stuff on a back up drive or partitions on this harddrive, but it still blows to have to reformat....

*much gnashing of teeth*

even did a registry clean (something I avoid like the plague because of the potential for disaster) to try and get the blighter, but to no avail.

*sigh*

probably a rootkit. After some investigation, the only comfort I can get is that I'm not alone. there are tons of PC owners out there in the same boat, which is really sucky.

Thing is that those effing trojans are everywhere too, and spyware. And you can get them from anywhere and everywhere (just regular sites too). Seems like lately I'll go to a normal, safe-looking site and then whammo, ESET pops up saying it blocked a virus!

*sigh* I had to re-format my C: drive after all. The blasted rootkit wouldn't stop reinstalling, and redirecting my searches in google....what a pill!!

so now I'm re installing everything and starting again. Thank goodness for backups.

and yes, despite my NOD32/eset saying it had caught and quarantined the virus, it was still there.....*shakes head*

bugger.
