Ack... I am trying to decide on a camera to buy. Would you believe, I don't actually own a camera? It's shocking. Anyway, I have a generous budget (although not generous enough for a Canon EOS 400D, unfortunately, so don't suggest it), and I think I may as well set myself up with something snazzy, so... any suggestions? I would rather like a Canon ( Read more... )

I think we should band together for that 400D...

I have a Canon A620 (so I assume the A640 is the next one up) and I love it. The colours are brilliant and it has a good degree of manual control should you want that. I never thought I'd use the swivvelly screen, but it actually completely changes the way you photograph. My photos are here - http://www.flickr.com/photos/whoopdedoo/ - everything since about April last year has been shot with the A620.

I think Al's dad just got the A640 actually, and he sent us some really good photos recently. He makes lights and they're super-hard to photograph, but the camera coped well with them.

The only reason I would leave my A620 is to get a 400D, actually! I can't recommend it enough, and I think it's a really good step towards getting a dSLR when you don't actually want to carry one around with you!

Thanks Sarah! I think I will probably go for the A640, the sample pictures I've looked at tend to have the edge over the S3 IS. I think the main draw of the S3 is that it looks like a dSLR, so I could just live a lie ;). I don't really need its 12x optical zoom, which is the only other benefit over the A640 (its optical zoom is 4x). Your photos with the A620 are really, really good, and as you say, the level of colour is fantastic.
I think I'm sold!
